Playing With / One Stat to Rule Them All

Go To

Basic Trope: One "stat" (attribute, skill, rating, etc.) is significantly more valuable than any others.

  • Straight: Tales of Troperia XVII uses The Six Stats and presents them as balanced. However, a high enough Dexterity allows a character to attack twice in a single turn, dealing more damage with two standard attacks than nearly any other damage source in the game. As such, players only use characters with the highest Dexterity scores and put all of their effort into raising Dexterity.
  • Exaggerated: High Dexterity if a full-on Game-Breaker, trivializing all challenges.
  • Downplayed: A high Dexterity makes a character disproportionately strong, but not overly so.
  • Justified: The game's setting prioritizes dodging and attacking quickly over other forms attack, so Dexterity was intentionally coded to be stronger than the other stats.
  • Inverted: Dump Stat
  • Subverted: Several tough bosses are immune to the "double attack" a high Dexterity grants, making them extremely tough to defeat if you haven't built a balanced party.
  • Double Subverted: ...those bosses all have significant weaknesses that you can exploit even with underleveled, less-dexterous characters.
  • Parodied: Whenever the player tries to raise a stat other than Dexterity, the game will ask them if they want to waste their points.
  • Zig-Zagged: A high enough Dexterity allows for a double attack which deals more damage than nearly any other damage source, but many enemies have high physical resistances or outright immunity to physical attacks which limits this strategy. However, having just a single party member strong with magic can defeat these foes, allowing you to use more dexterous characters in your other party slots to dominate all other foes.
  • Averted: All stats are balanced, with none having universal advantages over the others.
  • Enforced: The game is based on a book in which the heroes save the world relying on their more dexterous members, so the game was coded to match.
  • Lampshaded: The first time you put your four highest Dexterity characters into the party together, Quirby sarcastically comments "oh sure, us slow folks will just hang back..."
  • Exploited: Min-Maxing
  • Defied: Dexterity is Nerfed in a balance patch.
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: ???
  • Deconstructed: After running roughshod over the first half of the game with a high Dexterity party, the Big Bad empowers his minions with a buff that makes them immune to double attacks, neutering this strategy while crippling a player who hasn't built up their other party members.
