Playing With / One Game for the Price of Two

Go To

Basic Trope: A game gets split into two, and you need to play both to see everything.

  • Straight: The third game in the Alice and Bob RPG series is released as two versions, Red Earth and Blue Skies; both of them have Version-Exclusive Content (such as bosses and story elements), meaning the player has to either purchase both, or socialize with another to see everything.
  • Exaggerated:
    • Alice and Bob RPG 3 gets 100 versions, each of which need to be connected to each other to get everything.
    • The entire ending is locked unless you connect the opposite version.
  • Downplayed:
    • Alice and Bob RPG 3 gets released as two versions; although it is possible to complete the versions on their own, the encounter rate for certain enemies and items will be lower.
    • Alice and Bob RPG 3 gets released as two co-op versions, Alice Side and Bob Side; however the changes are minimal (a few Palette Swaps and different routes).
  • Justified: Alice and Bob RPG already heavily encourages socialization, so the next step was to lock content behind the opposite version to encourage it further.
  • Inverted: All content, including that of its predecessors, are accessible without needing to socialize.
  • Subverted: Despite concerns, the developers Alice and Bob RPG 3 promise nothing relating to completion will be locked behind socialization.
  • Double Subverted: They keep their promise, however a few minigames unrelated to completion are locked behind the opposite version.
  • Parodied: The game forces you to connect the opposite version on its title screen, effectively forcing the player to socialize.
  • Zig-Zagged: Alice and Bob RPG 3 initially gets released as two versions with Version-Exclusive Content, however both versions get merged and re-released as the Compilation Re-release Alice and Bob RPG 3 Deluxe for the next console. Deluxe on its own lets you play either version of the game, but it also has its own Version-Exclusive Content, including an Old Save Bonus if you connect the previous versions of Alice and Bob RPG 3.
  • Enforced:
    • The developers are doing this to maximize profits of their game.
    • Alternatively, they want to promote gamers to socialize with other fellow gamers.
  • Played for Drama: Backlash from this design decision leads to fans boycotting the game, causing it to flop.
