Basic Trope: A non-smoker pretends they smoke. It doesn't go well.
- Straight: Randy's friends offer him a cigarette and ask him if he smokes. He doesn't, but because they all believe Smoking Is Cool, he decides to pretend he does. So he accepts the cigarette, lights it, takes a big drag and starts coughing violently.
- Exaggerated:
- Randy tries to eat the cigarette. When he's told he's doing it wrong, he awkwardly tries to pass it off as a joke and claims he "of course" knows what he's supposed to do... and takes apart the cigarette to snort the tobacco.
- Randy keeps pretending to do various drugs. He has never successfully convinced anyone: He claimed to drink, but was clearly not prepared for the taste of the alcohol. He claimed to smoke weed, but coughed even more than when he tried to smoke tobacco. He claimed to use LSD, but gave himself away when it became clear that he thought he had to inject it.
- Downplayed: Randy pretends to be a chain smoker, but starts feeling unwell after five cigarettes.
- Justified: Randy never smoked before in his life. Naturally, he can't handle the smell of tobacco.
- Inverted: Randy has been a heavy smoker for a while, but decides to pretend he's having his first cigarette. His fake coughs after the first drag are not very convincing.
- Subverted: Randy realizes that he probably can’t keep up the lie for long, and quickly admits to his friends that he doesn’t actually smoke.
- Double Subverted: His friends don’t clearly hear him, and ask if he said something about being too much of a wimp to smoke. Randy denies this, and decides to keep up the lie.
- Parodied: “What do you mean ‘humans can’t smoke Troperian cigarettes?’ Of course I smoke!” says Randy, taking the strange extraterrestrial cigarette from his alien friend. He lights it, takes one puff, and instantly dies.
