Basic Trope: A character or object is shown and presented as important, but it moves offscreen to show who or what was really being addressed.

  • Straight: Bob goes on an all-expenses-paid vacation to Miami and is told he'll have a Toyota rented for him on the plane. Once he arrives at his hotel, he's shown an all new Supra that he'll get to drive while he's there...only for the Supra to drive off revealing a 20-year-old Corolla that's seen better days behind it.
  • Exaggerated: Bob is told that a car has been rented for him. He arrives at the hotel and sees a million dollar Lamborghini HurĂ¡can, only for it to zoom off and reveal a very old VW Beetle clunker.
  • Downplayed: Bob hears that he's been rented a Corvette. He gets to the hotel and sees a beautiful new C8, which slowly rolls off and show a freshly refurbished C5.
  • Justified: Bob's trip is only worth a limited value, and the newer and better car was only there by coincidence.
  • Inverted: The Corolla leaves to reveal the Supra.
  • Subverted: The Supra rolls off to reveal another Supra behind it.
  • Double Subverted:...but then that Supra leaves to reveal Bob's Corolla.
  • Parodied:
    • An entire service exists for the sole purpose of rolling off fast, new cars for slow, old ones, and the company that managed Bob's trip called them up.
    • Bob can't handle the fact that he isn't getting a Supra, instead getting a Supra that is one year older.
  • Zig-Zagged: The Supra rolls away, revealing an old Corolla, which drives away to reveal an even nicer Supra, which itself itself drives away revealing a nicer Corolla.
  • Averted: The first car that Bob sees is his car
  • Enforced: ???
  • Lampshaded: ???
  • Invoked: ???
  • Exploited: ???
  • Defied: The Supra is moved out of the way before Bob arrives, the company does not want to give him a false sense of hope.
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: ???
