Basic Trope: One or more characters are drawn in a different art style than the others.

  • Straight: Alice is the only Animesque character in a series where everyone else is drawn in a much more western style.
  • Exaggerated: Every character is drawn in a different art style, even in the Nonstandard Game Over screens.
  • Downplayed: Alice looks slightly different to the other characters.
  • Justified:
    • Alice is from Another Dimension
    • We're seeing the world through the eyes of Bob, who sees her Animesque.
    • Alice initially looked like everyone else, but a previous event transformed her into her current appearance.
    • Alice is Japanese, and as such, is drawn in an Animesque artstyle. Conversely, in Alice's spinoff, Bob is drawn as a much more western character.
  • Inverted:
    • In a television show stated by the creators to be an anime, Alice is the only character with a design resembling anime.
    • Reused Character Design
  • Subverted: Alice looks unusual, but she slowly begins to fit the regular style.
  • Double Subverted: Then she's back to her debut appearance.
  • Parodied: Alice looks like a poorly animated doodle while everyone else is animated very well, or vice versa.
  • Zig Zagged: Alice looks unusual, but she's met during an Art Shift and actually looks regular. But she slowly fits the regular style, yet turns back into her debut appearance Depending on the Artist.
  • Averted: All characters are drawn in the same art style.
  • Enforced:
    • Alice was designed by a different person than the other characters.
    • Alice is meant to represent The Golden Age of Animation, and thus has a Rubber Hose design, instead of the more naturally jointed one used by the rest of the cast.
  • Lampshaded:
    • "You look different than the rest of us, somehow."
    • "How come you look so different than everyone else." "I'm not from here." "Oh!"
  • Invoked: Alice's design difference is deliberate; she specifically wants to stand out in a crowd of people.
  • Exploited: The Big Bad doesn't know exactly what the heroes look like but knows that one of them is drawn differently. He uses this to kidnap Alice.
  • Defied: Alice breaks the fourth wall to force the artist to draw her correctly.
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: "What is with having one character in a completely different style? It looks really jarring."
  • Intended Audience Reaction: The writers and animators intend to show by Painting the Medium that Alice isn't from around here.
  • Deconstructed: Alice's design is picked up unconsciously by Medium aware characters, who find her slightly deformed at best and horrifying at worst.
  • Reconstructed: The series has a stronger fourth wall and so no-one notices Alice's unusual design. Those that do are Fourth Wall Observers who are in on The Masquerade.
