Basic Trope: Something (especially a line of dialogue) that has nothing to do with the context, and is often completely nonsensical.
- Straight: Alice, Bob, Charlie, and Debra are having a conversation, and at one point Charlie randomly comments "I like bananas.."
- Exaggerated:
- Everything Charlie says is completely nonsensical and has nothing to do with anything said.
- Word-Salad Humor
- Downplayed:
- Charlie's comment is a bit odd considering the context, but not terribly so.
- Only part of Charlie's comment comes out of left field.
- Justified:
- Charlie is a Cloud Cuckoo Lander or The Ditz.
- Charlie actually thought they were talking about bananas.
- Charlie wanted to share an interesting fact, and didn't realize what the conversation was about.
- Charlie is a kid, and kids are sometimes known to say things that make no sense given the context of the conversation.
- First sign that something hit Charlie in the back of his head.
- Charlie just thought it was funny.
- Inverted: The conversation Alice, Bob, Charlie, and Debra are having is completely nonsensical, so Debra asking "Do you want to go to my house later?" is the non sequitur line.
- Subverted: When questioned, Charlie points out that he just noticed someone's selling bananas nearby.
- Double Subverted: "Yeah, there is, but what does that have to do with anything?"
- Parodied: Charlie says "Completely out of left field statement that doesn't mean anything and flat out makes no sense.", to which Alice agrees.
- Zig-Zagged: ???
- Averted: No random statements are made.
- Enforced: An Establishing Character Moment for Charlie.
- Lampshaded:
- Bob: "That doesn't even make any sense."
- Alice: What...
- Invoked: ???
- Exploited: Charlie is getting mugged, so he says "Rat heels on toast" and runs off. The thief just stands there, bewildered.
- Defied: Charlie is told to not say random statements.
- Discussed: ???
- Conversed: ???
