Playing With / Non-Nude Bathing

Go To

Basic Trope: A character is bathing, but not naked.

  • Straight: Alice is taking a bath, but not in the nude.
  • Exaggerated: Alice is taking a bath fully dressed.
  • Downplayed: Alice takes a bath in her underwear or a bathing suit.
  • Justified:
    • Alice is a prude even when nobody is there.
    • Alice is aware people are watching her.
    • Alice is a Cloud Cuckoo Lander who believes her clothes need a bath, too.
    • Alice is in such a hurry that she believes washing her clothes while she's still wearing them is quicker than bathing and then changing into new clothes while her old ones are put through laundry.
    • Alice is wearing a lifesuit to help her heal and keep her functioning. The 'water' is a nutrient solution to feed it.
    • Alice has a nasty wound that's protected by the piece of clothing she doesn't take off.
    • Alice is a cautious Reluctant Fanservice Girl and keeps her clothes on at all time so she never have to be naked.
    • Alice has body image issues, and doesn't like to look at herself nude.
    • Alice hides something.
    • Alice fell in the pond for reasons other than bathing (and thus no time to take off her clothes) but decided to take advantage of the situation to deal with being filthy.
  • Inverted: Skinny Dipping (that is, swimming for non-bathing reasons without any clothing on).
  • Subverted: Alice begins to bathe in a swimsuit, but takes it off.
  • Double Subverted: But then puts it on again.
  • Parodied: Alice is normally nude, but puts on clothes when bathing.
  • Zig Zagged:
    • The whole cast is seen showering, some are nude, some are not.
    • Alice is explicitly shown reaching underneath her clothes to wash.
  • Averted:
  • Enforced:
    • Alice is a child and is shown bathing while fully clothed to avoid any issues that may arise from depicting her naked (such as difficulty in obscuring her nudity or the scene potentially leading to accusations of pandering to pedophiles).
    • The work is intended to be family-friendly and the production team feel that having characters bathe while still clothed is easier than having to think up ways to keep the nudity tasteful.
  • Lampshaded: "You've got clothes on."
  • Invoked: Nudity, even at home, is against the law.
  • Exploited: Jim uses the situation to paint Alice as a loon in front of everybody ("Come take a look at Crazy Alice! Hey, Alice, whassamatter, your Prude-O-Meter got stuck on eleven this morning?")
  • Defied:
    • Alice makes sure to take her clothes off before bathing.
    • "Of course I'm gonna get naked to bathe! How am I going to wash every part of my body if some of them are covered up?"
  • Discussed: "How do you wash with clothes on?"
  • Conversed: "Is that character bathing but not in the nude?"
  • Implied: Alice gets into the shower but we don't see her take her clothes off.
  • Deconstructed:
    • Alice's insistence on being clothed while bathing leads to her developing a fungal infection from constantly wearing damp clothing.
    • Alice alienates her friends because they see her as a weirdo for refusing to get naked while bathing.
  • Reconstructed:
    • Alice changes into a swimsuit to take a shower/bath. This lets her remain clothed while bathing, but prevents her from having to constantly wear wet clothing (especially considering swimsuits are made to be worn in water in the first place).
    • The clothes help Alice conceal the dagger she brought to the shower.
    • True friends don't go around ogling their friends' bodies. It's obvious now which were true and false.
