Basic Trope: A story is set a few years after it is released.

  • Straight: Planet of the Tropers comes out in 2022 and is set in 2025.
  • Exaggerated: Planet of the Tropers is set in 2023.
  • Downplayed: Planet of the Tropers comes out in 2022 and is set in 2029.
  • Justified:
    • The author wanted to make the story feel different, but not too different.
    • The author decided to set the story a few years ahead just in case it got caught in Development Hell.
  • Inverted:
    • Planet of the Tropers comes out in 2022 and is set in 2122.
    • Planet of the Tropers comes out in 2025 and is set in 2022.
  • Subverted: Planet of the Tropers is said to be set a month in the future, but isn't.
  • Double Subverted: It's set 5 years from now.
  • Parodied: ???
  • Zig Zagged: The story was written in 2022, but set to be in 2023 since that was its aimed release year. But in late 2023, it gets rewritten to take place in 2024 just to prepare. But it winds up coming out in 2025 because of Development Hell.
  • Averted: The movie isn't set very close or very far from now.
  • Enforced: "We don't have enough money in the budget to make our movie really looks outlandish from nowadays. So, let's set this movie in the next 3 years instead!"
  • Lampshaded: The Show Within a Show is set in 2028, and someone comments on how "They always set things just a few years ahead, huh?"
  • Invoked: ???
  • Exploited: ???
  • Defied: ???
  • Discussed: "What year are we in?" "Depends. When did the writer make this book?"
  • Conversed: ???
