Basic Trope: A fatal case of Contrived Coincidence.

  • Straight: Bob brings his dog, Tropey, into a castle, who chases a stray cat, toppling over a series of suits of armor. The last one bounces off the wall and the axe in its hand falls on Alice's skull, killing her.
  • Exaggerated: Bob spits out a piece of gum, which the klutzy Alice trips on. While she's still unsteady, she walks onto a freshly varnished part of the floor. She falls, dropping her lighter, which happens to bounce in such a way that it turns on. Also, the castle is sitting on a leaking gas pocket, which promptly explodes.
  • Downplayed: Bob brings Tropey into the castle, who chases a stray cat, knocking over a series of suits of armor. One of them drops its axe, cutting off Alice's hand.
  • Justified:
    • Coincidences will happen, and some of them won't be pleasant.
    • A very mean representation of Death is constantly watching over the characters.
  • Inverted: Bob brings Tropey into the castle, who chases a stray cat, starting a series of suits of armor falling over. He runs between Alice's legs and knocks her over. The next second, one of the suits of armor loses its axe, which falls directly on the spot where Alice had been.
  • Subverted: Bob brings Tropey into the castle, who chases a cat, knocking over a series of suits of armor, one of which drops the axe it's carrying, killing Alice... but it turns out not to be a coincidence.
  • Double Subverted: However, while Bob is walking along the side of the road, he trips on his untied shoelaces and falls into the road. The cars get into a massive accident trying to avoid him, resulting in one car going off the road and into an electrical pole. The pole jerks, a live wire comes down on Bob, and he's electrocuted.
  • Parodied: Bob brings Tropey into the castle, who chases a random horse. The horse trips over a fence and hits a nearby crane, causing the sleeping operator inside to startle awake and accidentally kick a lever that lifts a pile of teddy bears and pillows into the air. It begins to rain and Alice and Bob begin to leave the castle. Lightning strikes the hook carrying the platform of teddy bears and pillows, causing it to tip over and the teddy bears and pillows crush Alice to death.
  • Zig-Zagged: Many people die in the work, and it constantly mixes with the Disaster Dominoes deaths and normal deaths, like a car crash or a murder.
  • Averted: All deaths in the work happen in a non-contrived way.
  • Enforced: The creator needs to get Alice out of the story fast.
  • Lampshaded: "Wow...the Grim Reaper really got creative with this one."
  • Invoked: Emperor Evulz creates a spell that can cause bad luck, which will inevitably kill its target using whatever items are nearby.
  • Exploited: Evulz convinces Bob to bring Tropey with him from the very beginning, knowing exactly what it will bring.
  • Defied: Bob is aware of the events that conspire to kill Alice, and manages to foil them at every turn by having Tropey on a leash and catching the suit of armor before a strong gust of wind topples it over.
  • Discussed: "You can't escape Death's plans for you. Even if you're aware of it, he'll always have you exactly where he wants."
  • Conversed:
    • "Careful. This feels like one of those cosmic Rube Goldberg deathtraps that somehow manage to kill you."
    • "What kind of Final Destination shit is this?"
