Go To

Basic Trope: A character can't remember their own name.

  • Straight: Bob forgets his name.
  • Exaggerated: Every character in the story forgets their name.
  • Downplayed: Bob only forgets his full name, Robert Troperson - he's still able to remember that his name is Bob.
  • Justified:
    • Bob is experiencing memory loss.
    • In the case of the downplayed example, Bob has been Only Known By His Nickname for so long that he forgot that he had a real name.
  • Inverted:
    • Bob forgets everything about himself except for his name.
    • Bob forgets other people's names, but can remember his own.
  • Subverted: Bob realizes he has amnesia and wonders if he's forgotten his name. But then it turns out he remembers it.
  • Double Subverted: Only it then turns out that "Bob' isn't actually his real name.
  • Parodied: ???
  • Zig-Zagged: Bob sometimes forgets his name, and sometimes is able to remember it.
  • Averted: Bob is able to remember what his name is.
  • Enforced: ???
  • Lampshaded: ???
  • Invoked: Bob is subject to Laser-Guided Amnesia so that he'll forget what his name is.
  • Exploited: ???
  • Defied: Bob has a document with his name displayed somewhere he can easily see it often, just in case he forgets it.
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: ???
