Basic Trope: A prize that gets revealed only after it is selected or is unable to be selected anymore.

  • Straight: In The Great Tropes Game Show, a winning player is given the choice between one of three prizes. Two rewards are known, but a third is offered that gets revealed only when a selection is made. The third is the "Mystery Box" reward.
  • Exaggerated:
    • No rewards are revealed before a choice is made. The winner must guess blindly and hope for a reward that has any value to them.
    • The Great Tropes Game Show is based around trying to eliminate low value or unwanted prizes from being selected by selecting mystery boxes to give up. Only eliminated mystery boxes will reveal their prizes at first, then when a mystery box is finally selected, it and the remaining boxes are revealed.
  • Downplayed:
    • The Mystery Box has some of the prizes revealed before the rest are revealed after a choice is made.
    • The rewards are known, but distributed across boxes that each hide one of the known prizes. The player must take a correct guess to get the desired reward.
  • Justified: ???
  • Inverted: A person gives something as a gift in a box. Somehow, the person to be gifted already knows the contents of the box, but the gifter doesn't.
  • Subverted: The Mystery Box's prizes are revealed before the player has to choose a prize.
  • Double Subverted: The prize's real contents are revealed on selection, the earlier reveal was fake.
  • Parodied: ???
  • Zig Zagged: The behavior of the mystery boxes is inconsistent. Some boxes have the correct prizes revealed before a choice has to be made. Some don't reveal any prize at first, and are revealed normally when any choice is made. Some reveal a fake prize before the choice and after a choice is made the real prize is revealed. A final "low confidence" mystery box is revealed only if the player chooses that specific box.
  • Averted:
    • The game show reveals all the prizes before a choice has to be made between one of them.
    • The winner's prize is determined during the game and no choices are given.
    • A gift is revealed before being sent to the person, so the person will know what it is before being gifted.
  • Enforced: The game's creator or an executive of the show adds a mystery box reward believing it would increase suspense and excitement.
  • Lampshaded: ???
  • Invoked: ???
  • Exploited: ???
  • Defied: ???
  • Discussed: ???
