Basic Trope: Certain characters, items or locations will be named ???? until you learn their names proper in the story.
- Straight: Bob's rival Charlie is called ???? until they introduce themselves.
- Exaggerated: All characters, locations or items are called ???? regardless of their actual importance.
- Downplayed: A placeholder name for an unknown object or character ends with "...?" to denote that it's only a guess, such as an odd bladed weapon being named "a sword...?"
- Justified: Bob doesn't know the names of things he is unfamiliar with, so logically the player wouldn't either unless Bob learns the proper names.
- The game allows you to name Bob or certain characters and they'll be referred to as ???? until you name them. If you don't name them, they'll either stay as ???? or be assigned a default name.
- A Superboss is named ???? because they're an important character who will either be the hero of the next game or the Big Bad. Alternately, they're so powerful that that their name, stats and attacks are all ????.
- ???? is the name of a character who Bob doesn't canonically meet until the next game, and who they logically shouldn't know anything about until the proper time.
- The location is an Eldritch Location or would have no specific name, so it's called ???? to save time or make the area seem scarier than it actually is.
- The item you're using is a Artifact of Doom that gradually erases the user's memories and prevents them from creating new ones. By the end of the game, all of your items are named ??? as is the world and everyone in it.
- ??? is an Eldritch Abomination and so ??? is a way of conveying this to the player as early as possible.
- Inverted:
- ???? is your name and it can either be changed or stays that way.
- Someone whose true identity is either obvious or soon to be revealed is called "!!!" to denote importance or alertness.
- Hello, [Insert Name Here]
- Subverted: You can name your rival who already has one, but the question mark is missing on the typing screen.
- Double Subverted: His real name is actually ????
- Parodied: "???" really is their name, who they chose themself!
- Averted:' Unknown items are described with generic descriptors lacking in punctuation marks.
- Defied: You can't name your rival, as the rival immediately introduce themselves as Charlie.
