Basic Trope: Two characters facing possible/almost certain death have sex.
- Straight: A fierce battle is raging all around Rachel and Sam. Fearing that they might not live through it, they take a few minutes out to have sex.
- Exaggerated: Rachel and Sam are having excessively frantic, loudly orgasmic sex as the entire world collapses around them. Their final orgasms coincide perfectly with the complete obliteration of the planet.
- Downplayed: Rachel and Sam are inside a bank that's currently being robbed by a murderer. They kiss each other.
- Justified:
- Rachel and Sam have only recently discovered that they are in love with each other and, fearing that the crisis will take one or both of them before they can express this, decide to get intimate while they still have a chance.
- Rachel and / or Sam is a virgin and expressly do not wish to die as one, and decide to ensure this by having sex with the first person they encounter.
- The current moment is extremely tense and stressful, prompting Rachel and / or Sam to seek release.
- Rachel and Sam have spent all their time surrounded by death and want to feel some small reminder of what it is to be alive.
- The act of having sex will itself save Rachel and Sam's life, possibly by warming them up and keeping them from freezing to death.
- Inverted:
- Glad-to-Be-Alive Sex
- Rachel and/or Sam does want to die a virgin, because they believe their virtue will be rewarded in the afterlife.
- Subverted:
- Rachel and Sam are about to have sex when Bob storms in and ruins the moment.
- There is a crisis. Sam and / or Rachel suggests sex. Affronted, Rachel / Sam slaps Sam / Rachel.
- Double Subverted:
- Rachel and Sam kick Bob out and get down to it.
- Immediately after slapping Sam / Rachel, Rachel / Sam jumps him / her.
- Parodied:
- The crisis is not that severe. Sam and / or Rachel nevertheless insists that they should have sex.
- A Running Gag is made of of Sam or Rachel responding to every little problem by declaring they must immediately have sex while they still can.
- Rachel and Sam are having such passionate and intense sex under the belief that they could die that the crisis concludes without them even noticing.
- They are then discovered in the middle of the act. Embarrassment and Hilarity Ensues.
- Zig Zagged: They decide to have sex, but Sam can't get it up. After a few minutes relaxing and talking about it, Sam is able to fulfill his duty.
- Averted: Sex doesn't come up between Rachel and Sam during the crisis.
- Enforced: The writers have been ordered to include a sex scene between Rachel and Sam and decide that before the climactic battle when they could both die is as good a place as any.
- Lampshaded: "Well, at least I'm gonna die happy..."
- Invoked: Rachel and Sam make an agreement that if they're both in life-threatening circumstances, they'll have sex before they die.
- Exploited: While Rachel and Sam are distracted by desperate battlefield sex, an enemy soldier exploits the opportunity and kills them.
- Defied:
- Knowing that one is hoping to get lucky with the other before they die, Rachel and / or Sam makes sure that she's / he's nowhere near him / her during the final crisis.
- One of them tells the other that she's / he's not going to sleep with him / her until after the crisis is over.
- "If you're the alternative, then yes!"
- Discussed: "There's a very good chance that none of us are going to live to see tomorrow, people. Therefore, I suggest that you all find someone special to share the next few hours with."
- Conversed: "Funny how sex seems to be the first and last thing on the minds of these characters."
- Deconstructed:
- Since circumstances are not conveniently waiting around for Rachel and Sam to finish having sex, one or both of them are killed before they have sex or during the act. If either of them survives, it will be with lasting scars, both physical and mental... ESPECIALLY if one dies during the act while the other survives. (Nothing ruins the mood quite like a flashback to your last sex partner's head being reduced to chunky salsa while you were in the act.)
- One of them is a Manipulative Bastard and is merely using the situation to coerce the other into having sex.
- Rachel is a superhero and Sam is her love interest. It appears to be the End of the World but halfway through Rachel remembers that she could could probably just save everyone and have sex later. Sam thinks she doesn't spend enough time with him.
- By surrendering to their irrational primal instinct, they bring their own doom upon themselves! Why?! Because instead of screwing like dogs in heat, they should have stopped to think logically about the crisis and try to figure out a way to escape from it!
- Reconstructed: Rachel and Sam do everything they can to resolve the crisis, and when they can do no more, collapse in each others' arms and enjoy one another's company before the perceived end comes.
- Played For Laughs: Rachel and Sam are two people who have mutual dislike for each other. Having had sex while swept up in the circumstances, mutual mortification and vicious promises not to tell anyone else what happened under pain of death, coupled with newfound discomforting Unresolved Sexual Tension, ensues.
- Played For Drama: Rachel and Sam have other partners who discover their infidelity during the crisis. While both Rachel and Sam insist that what happened between them resulted from the passion of the moment, their partners are left feeling betrayed, and their relationships severely damaged.
