Playing With / Money for Nothing

Go To

Basic Trope: It is fairly easy to earn lots of money yet there is nothing to spend it on.

  • Straight: Earning money in the RPG Legends of Troperia is very easy, but it's basically useless, since shops only sell things like ammo refill, which you can find by cutting grass.
  • Exaggerated: Money is vomited at you in billions, and the only things shops sell are decorative flowers.
  • Downplayed: Money is hard to come by, but useful things are free or cheap, meaning the only things you're likely to spend money on are Bragging Rights Reward.
  • Justified:
  • Inverted: Earning money is a slow and laborious process, and shops sell expensive key items which are required to progress.
  • Subverted: Some shops late in the game sell expensive, but powerful items.
  • Double Subverted: But as you progress through the game, shopkeepers notice your heroism and give you a Hero Discount.
  • Parodied:
    • All shops sell their stock for free; as such, nobody knows what money is for.
    • The Hero is fabulously wealthy, but dehydrates to death because shops don't sell basic necessities, such as food or water.
  • Zig Zagged: Early on in the game, finding or earning money is easy, and shops sell things such as ammo refills and potions. During the midgame, money suddenly becomes sparser and shops begin selling more powerful items such as armor and weaponry. Later on, when you're nearing the Big Bad's lair, shopkeepers are becoming more aware of the villain's plans to Take Over the World, and thus give you a large Hero Discount. After all, they don't want to die or suffer a Fate Worse than Death any more than you do.
  • Averted:
    • Shops are useful because they sell key items, without which, the game would be unwinnable.
    • Money may be spent to directly level up indefinitely, albeit with diminishing returns.
  • Enforced: ???
  • Lampshaded: "Hey... do you sell any food?" "No, we just sell ammo." "For... frog's sake, that's what every shopkeeper says!"
  • Invoked: ???
  • Exploited:
  • Defied: You're given the ability to find exactly as much money as you'll need at any given point.
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: ???
  • Played For Drama: The Infinity +1 Sword can only be gotten as a Side Quest reward. All that you can buy in game are Cosmetic Award that take the form of in character luxuries that aren't required in any way shape or form to progress, and Evil Pays Better. And the player will have to make the following choice for the character: either be on the good side of the Karma Meter, earning nothing more than the Good Feels Good feeling, or live a life of luxury because no one is stopping you... Will you play as a virtuous unsung hero, or a a rich and famous Villain with Good Publicity living a life of luxury? The choice is yours...
