Basic Trope: A sequel with identical or very similar gameplay to the original, but featuring new levels.

  • Straight: The much-anticipated Heroes of Troperia II hits shelves, but the gameplay, story, art, and general design are almost exactly the same as the original.
  • Exaggerated: Heroes of Troperia II is actually a total reprint of the first game.
  • Downplayed: Heroes of Troperia II generally plays the same as the first game, but has a few new mechanics that give it its own identity.
  • Justified: The creators had a lot of ideas that didn't make it into the first game due to time constraints, so they made another game with very similar gameplay so the ideas wouldn't go to waste or have to be modified so much.
  • Inverted: Heroes of Troperia II is a part of the series In Name Only.
  • Subverted: Heroes of Troperia II starts out looking and playing a lot like the original, but undergoes a drastic shift in the middle that makes it totally different.
    • Halfway through the game, you find out that time was actually reset to the start of the first game. The story is very different from that point on.
  • Double Subverted: But then later on, it returns to being the same as the first.
    • The story is different, but there are no significant changes to the gameplay.
  • Parodied: It's outright stated that this is literally the same, complete with Self-Deprecation towards it.
  • Zig-Zagged: The game repeatedly shifts between the first's style and the sequel's.
  • Averted: Heroes of Troperia II has a unique enough identity that it doesn't recycle ideas from the first game.
  • Enforced: Tighter budgets result in limited reformulation of the sequel.
  • Lampshaded: "Hey, these locations feel familiar!"
  • Invoked: Emperor Evulz didn't learn the mistakes he made in the first game; and just remade everything similar to each other.
  • Exploited: Heroes of Troperia I players finish HoT2 faster than newcomers to the series.
  • Defied: The developers of Heroes of Troperia announce different mechanics to give the two entries a unique identity.
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: ???
  • Deconstructed: Due to this issue, fans of Heroes of Troperia cry "It's the Same, Now It Sucks!," and thus the sequel's reception drops considerably from the first game.
