Basic Trope: A (human) character who hates all humans.

  • Straight: Frederick, a human, absolutely hates every human living on the planet and delights in watching them suffer.
  • Exaggerated:
  • Downplayed: Frederick hates humans, but not to the point of wishing them death.
  • Justified:
  • Inverted:
  • Subverted: Frederick, at first, seems like a spiteful person that hates everyone but turns out to just be a Jerk with a Heart of Gold that actually likes most people...
  • Double Subverted: ...but still wishes they would all just die in a ten-thousand-degree fire.
  • Parodied:
    • Frederick, a human, hates his own race only because he is friends with non-human characters such as aliens, animals, and creatures who are above comprehension.
    • Frederick expresses his hate in an over-the-top, ham-fisted manner that nobody can take seriously.
    • Frederick wears a shirt reading "I Hate Humans."
    • Frederick's reason for hating all humans is incredibly petty and disproportionate: he developed a hatred for all of humanity because of his noisy neighbors.
  • Zig-Zagged: Some days you're a misanthrope ... some days you're a not-so-thrope...
  • Averted:
    • Frederick neither hates nor loves his human race, and doesn't care what they do.
    • Frederick hates (or loves) people regardless of them being humans.
  • Enforced:
    • "I've got an idea on what the new villain will be like — a human who hates humans!"
    • The author is a misanthrope and they made a misanthropic character to express their misanthropic views.
  • Lampshaded: "How could someone like you treat humans with great contempt despite being one?"
  • Invoked: Frederick used to be better, but someone went and did something that would forever cement his hatred for all mankind.
  • Exploited: Frederick becomes the Puppet King to the leaders of an Alien Invasion.
  • Defied:
    • Frederick figures that hating his own race is a waste of time, so he decides that it's better for him to mind his own business.
    • A forgiving hero has convinced Frederick that humans aren't so different and there are some good qualities they have. Although his faith in humans wasn't restored, he doesn't make a big deal about their bad qualities anymore.
  • Discussed: "I understand hating someone, but I wouldn't hate them because they're human like me."
  • Conversed: "He knows he's a human too, right?"
  • Implied: Eric talks about how humans are great despite their flaws. Frederick frowns at his comment.
  • Deconstructed:
    • Frederick is so focused on his hatred for other humans that this made him forget his goal to live a happy and successful life.
    • Frederick's misanthropy is dismissed and brutally mocked by others by label him as petty, whiny, and immature for holding such a belief.
    • Frederick lacks the resources to carry out any of his plans, and can't/won't get help from others because of his misanthropy. As such he is unable to achieve any of his potential goals and acts as more of a Paper Tiger than anything.
    • Frederick hates selfishness, cruelty and apathy in others. However, by condemning the human race, he becomes increasingly selfish, cruel and apathetic himself.
  • Reconstructed:
    • ...until an Outside-Context Problem in the form of aliens who practice no-nonsense ethics arrived withe the goal of annihilating humanity, and Frederick, being lucky enough to be contacted by the aliens, suggested that they should use a swarm of relativistic asteroids to do the job.
    • But Frederick learns to keep control of his hatred for other humans and focus on his personal goals. He later befriends others humans who hate humans just as much as he does and is content with his life.
    • But it's found out that the people who mock Frederick are the ones who have bullied and abused him as well as others, and this reinforces Frederick's misanthropy even further to the point he savagedly killed the mockers.
    • Frederick still values kindness, but only towards animals, and a select few humans who don't infuriate him.
  • Played for Laughs:
    • Frederick declares his hatred for all humans. When it's pointed out to him that he is a human, his response is something along the lines of "No, I'm not."
    • Frederick declares his hatred for all humans. When it's pointed out to him that he is human he confirms that he hates himself as well.
  • Played for Drama:
  • Played for Horror: Frederick isn't just a misanthrope, he's a Serial Killer who specializes in Cruel and Unusual Deaths.
  • Plot Foundation: Frederick's attitude being on display in this fashion is meant to make the audience question whether some elements of his beliefs are in themselves. As with many other tropes, this can succeed or fail.
