Basic Trope: Characters know they're in a game/movie/comic/website/etc and take advantage of it.
- Straight: Bob asks the Player Character why he's sad, even though the only indication that he's sad is the Background Music.
- Exaggerated: There is no Player Character and Bob is always telling you what buttons to press and giving you hints.
- Downplayed: Bob asks the Player Character why he's sad even though the only indication that he's sad is the Background Music, but he prefaces it with "You look sad."
- Justified: Bob is an anthropomorphic dog and has been stated to have the ability to sniff others' emotions.
- Subverted: It turns the music is actually coming from the radio, and the Player Character chooses the music depending on his mood.

- Deconstructed: Bob realizes that he's in a show, and comes to the realization that as a fictional character he doesn't truly 'exist', everything is up to the whim of the writers, and eventually the series will end and he will cease to exist. This drives Bob to depressive nihilism as realize how meaningless his life and actions actually are to the story in question.
- Reconstructed: The other characters eventually reassure Bob that even if he doesn't truly exist and he doesn't have true free will, his actions will still ultimately have an impact on the viewers watching/playing/reading the story, and he is ultimately important to those immediately around him. Although it doesn't completely drag him out of the horror, it's enough to make him realize he should enjoy the time he has while he still has it.
