Basic Trope: A character (mostly — though not obligatory — a guy) chosen by a Gold Digger for their wealth.

  • Straight: Barry is a successful barrister up in his years, and Alice marries him to get the better of his wealth.
  • Exaggerated: Barry is not just old, he really didn't age well. Still, our young, fresh Alice proposes to him on their second date, simply because he is a multi-millionaire.
  • Downplayed: Barry had a relationship with Alice since their college years. She had several romances besides Barry, but ultimately decided on him as the most financially secure option.
  • Justified: The show is about a deeply religious and traditionally patriarchal society where women aren't allowed to work at all, or are expected not to marry at all if they pursue a job. It is part of said society's laws that men support women and are punished if they don't. And if women try to work, they only can do so by the leave of their husbands, or else.
  • Inverted:
    • Patricia, a Rebellious Princess, proposes to Barry because of her genuine love for him, the rules of her conservative society and/or will of her parents be damned.
    • Alice's One True Love is Clive, a working-class guy. Rich Barry ends up rejected by her.
  • Gender Flip: Berta is a rich old lady approached by Alex, a young guy who secretly wants to get her riches.
  • Subverted:
    • Alice has sincere feelings towards Barry...
    • Barry has clearly stated in the prenup that Alice doesn't have rights to any of his assets in the event of a divorce.
    • It's actually just an Arranged Marriage...
  • Double Subverted:
  • Parodied: Alice and Barry are both Mock Millionaires who marry each other for their wealth, only to find there isn't any.
  • Zig Zagged: Barry has been in several relationships. Alice, the ambitious middle-class girl, was Only in It for the Money. Caroline, his Childhood Friend and a descendant of a noble rich family, didn't care about his wealth and genuinely liked him as a person. Diane, his college times neighbour, is... ambiguous on the subject.
  • Averted:
  • Enforced: "One more source for comedy in our series... Why of course, an old rich guy and a girl that only "loves" his money. Not bad."
  • Lampshaded: "Barry, you think you've got a Trophy Wife? Watch out, as it might well be that you are her trophy..."
  • Exploited: "So all these girls are after my money? Great! At least they wouldn't care about my looks... so I can have so much fun with each, and I can swap 'em like gloves!"
  • Defied:
    • Barry becomes a Celibate Hero or at least a Confirmed Bachelor and declines any marriage proposals to avoid becoming this.
    • Barry gives all his fortune to his company or to a charity fund (or chooses something similar to pull deliberate Riches to Rags), so that there would be no reason for Gold Diggers to pursue him.
  • Discussed: "I don't know what's more harrowing. The fact that Barry deludes himself into thinking money buys him Alice's faithfulness or the fact that Alice believes she won't be discarded for a younger mistress once she no longer looks like a teenager."
  • Conversed: "Easy to guess Alice isn't with Barry because he's pretty-looking, or charming, or romantic. There's only one reason for her choosing him..."
  • Played For Laughs: Barry still thinks Alice sincerely loves him despite her lavish spending and frequent Freudian Slips when talking with him on finance or relationship matters.
  • Played For Drama: Alice is constantly scheming to get rid of Barry so as to get the hold of all his possessions. Barry has already survived a few attempts on his life and is growing paranoid of his 'darling'.

So, darling, what do you want to buy from here before we move on to the main page?
