Basic Trope: A girl obtains superpowers and pretty clothes.

  • Straight: In Alice and Bob, Alice gains superpowers and pretty clothes through a Transformation Sequence that is activated through a Transformation Trinket given by a Mentor Mascot.
  • Exaggerated: Every girl in the work is a Magical Girl.
  • Downplayed: Alice can become a sorceress every time the world is in danger, but when it's not in danger she's an ordinary highschool girl.
  • Justified: Alice gains her powers from a dress of an ancient sorceress princess - it was meant to enhance her powers but even a mundane like her can become a decent sorceress when activated.
  • Inverted:
    • Alice's powers and pretty clothes are stripped from her through a transformation sequence.
    • Alice normally has magical powers unless she is forced into a very frilly power suppressing outfit which is effectively a Gilded Cage.
  • Subverted: It appears that Alice is a Magical Girl, but she's actually not.
  • Double Subverted: The real Magical Girl is Carol.
  • Parodied: War changes forever when it is discovered that just looking and acting very girly is the source of magical power. Macho miltary men around the world find they must practice being as girly as possible to keep up while girly girls join the military and study tactics and strategy.
  • Zig Zagged: It appears that both Alice and Carol are Magical Girls, but neither are. Emily is a Magical Girl, but it turns out the real Magical Girl is Gabrielle.
  • Averted: Alice goes about in her daily life without magic powers while wearing regular clothes.
  • Enforced: "Let's add a Magical Girl to make our show more popular."
  • Lampshaded: "That girl just transformed."
  • Invoked: Alice seeks out an Applied Phlebotinum to become a Magical Girl.
  • Exploited: The Big Bad targets Alice with a potion that kills any Magical Girl who drinks it.
  • Defied: Alice refuses to become a Magical Girl.
  • Discussed: "That girl will probably transform now."
  • Conversed: "Why does the show we're watching have so many Magical Girls?"
  • Deconstructed: Magical Girl Genre Deconstruction.
  • Reconstructed: A further deconstruction of the former, a Deconstructive Parody of the former, or have the former be on the idealistic side on the Sliding Scale of Idealism vs. Cynicism.
  • Gender-Inverted: Bob is the one that gains superpowers and pretty clothes.
