Basic Trope: A character started off as nice, but a series of events made them a misanthrope.
- Straight: Bob was a relatively normal person, but after experiencing betrayal from his friends, being dumped by his girlfriend, and being mistreated by his boss and co-workers, made him hate everyone around him and wants to live far away from society.
- Exaggerated: Bob was an All-Loving Hero, but after being treated as a punching bag for everyone, he becomes the Misanthrope Supreme bent on killing the entire human race, including himself.
- Downplayed: Bob becomes The Snark Knight after having to put up with his foolish and Jerkass friends.
- Justified: There is so much that Bob can take from humanity before he snaps and decides that Humans Are Bastards and he doesn't want to live around them anymore.
- Inverted: Bob started off as a bitter misanthrope, but after someone did something nice to him, he becomes a philanthropist.
- Subverted: After a series of events that leave Bob disenfranchised with his workplace, community, family, etc, he decides he "needs a vacation" and spends his paycheck on that trip to the Bahamas he always wanted to take.
- Double Subverted: But then his flight gets delayed for hours, there's a screaming child in front of him, they have to make an emergency landing, and he's forced to give up his seat to a more wealthy passenger. Bob hijacks the plane at gunpoint and forces the pilots to fly to the Bahamas or he'll kill them and crash the plane.
- Parodied: Bob becomes a misanthrope after someone stupidly spilled coffee all over his shirt.
- Zig Zagged: Bob becomes far more sarcastic and cutting than he used to be; however, he always softens his behaviour around people he knows are not guilty of his misadventures.
- Averted: Bob remains nice and patient despite all of the crap he's put up with.
- Enforced: "We want to have an Aesop on how nurture matters more than nature, and showing how even a nice guy like Bob can become an misanthrope under the right circunstances is a good way of showing this!
- Lampshaded: "What's gotten into you? You're not the normal Bob I used to know."
- Invoked:
- We never see Bob's backstory, but Alice mentions that after "that incident with his friends" Bob's opinion on humanity was never quite the same.
- The Big Bad manipulates events behind closed doors so that The Hero becomes a loyal follower to his cause by his own volition.
- "It's a Dog-Eat-Dog world: the world punches you, you punch back harder."
- Exploited: The Big Bad manipulates Bob into killing innocent people by appealing to his hatred of the society that wronged him, allowing them to fulfill their evil schemes without leaving a trail behind.
- Defied: "I know my life is crap; that doesn't mean I have the right to treat everyone else like dirt."
- Discussed: Hiro: "You know, as much as a bastard misanthrope Bob is, i can understand that he wasn't always like this."
- Conversed: "If everybody who went through things as rough as Bob in Real Life became like him, we would have MANY more Omnicidal Maniacs to deal with!"
- Implied: "Didn't Bob used to smile and not frown all the time before?"
- Deconstructed: Bob's behaviour ends up further alienating him from the world and making him miss chances to meet new friends, find another loved one or have a new job; not being able to spin out of his downward spiral, Bob eventually is Driven to Suicide.
- Reconstructed: Bob has a Heel Realization when it dawns to him that he is doing the exact same thing that happened to him to persons who were not at fault for how his life turned, making him put an effort in controlling his behaviour and, in time, he finds it in himself to love humanity again.
