Playing With / Love Father, Love Son

Go To

Basic Trope: A character cannot be with the one they love for some reason, but later falls for their loved one's child (or descendant).

  • Straight:
    • Alice dates Bob (who'd too old for her) and then later his son, Charlie (who's too young for her).
    • Twelve-year-old Ellen has a Precocious Crush on the great hero Danilo, and scorns his twelve-year-old son Florio for his immature behavior. As the children mature, Ellen realizes that her crush was merely hero worship, and Florio matures into better behavior, so they marry.
  • Exaggerated: Alice is a Time Abyss and has, over the eons, been romantically involved with not only Bob and Charlie, but even Charlie's grandson David.
  • Downplayed: Alice likes Bob, but that doesn't happen. In the Distant Finale, Alice finds herself smitten with Bob's son Charlie.
  • Justified: Charlie is very similar to Bob.
  • Inverted: Alice likes Bob, but he dies before they could marry. So she falls in love with his widowed father, Frank, instead.
  • Gender-Inverted: Bob has a crush on Helen (who is older than him), but then dates her daughter Alice (who is the same age as he is or younger).
  • Subverted: Despite looking like Bob, Charlie proves to be nothing like him when he grows up, and Alice's feelings for him fizzle out.
  • Double Subverted: Charlie proves to be nothing like Bob when he grows up, but Alice falls in love with this very different person, despite initial disappointment.
  • Parodied: Alice declares her undying love for every child Bob has the moment they're born.
  • Zig Zagged: ???
  • Averted: Alice continues to pine for Bob, having no particular feelings for his offspring.
  • Enforced: ???
  • Lampshaded: "You were into Bob then into his kid? That's freaky, Alice."
  • Invoked: "May your child fall in love with me in your stead!"
  • Exploited: King Bob, seeking an alliance with the unmarried Queen Alice, remembers her crush on him, and sends Prince Charlie to woo her, because that's the son who most resembles him.
  • Defied:
    • Alice tamps down on her budding feelings for Charlie.
    • Charlie calls Alice out for pursuing him romantically when she's already been with his father. Needless to say, Charlie does not want to date someone who's been romantically involved with his father.
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: ???
  • Deconstructed: Alice's interactions with an underage Charlie are very disturbing to Bob, so he forbids them from ever meeting again.
  • Played For Laughs: Alice gets teased by her friends and colleagues over her protectiveness of Charlie, much to her embarrassment.
  • Played For Drama: Alice realizes how wrong it is to project her feelings for Bob onto Charlie and represses them as best she can.
