- Straight: Alice, Bob, Cole, and Darrell try to kill Edward. Edward dies...but since four people were trying to, it's hard to tell who did it.
- Exaggerated: The whole town was trying to murder Edward.
- Downplayed: Bob and Darrell are both trying to ruin Edward's life through....questionable means. They are both investigated as possible suspects, but the evidence seems to point to both of them.
- Justified: Asshole Victim
- Inverted: Edward was an amazing person. The police automatically assume it was a heart attack because...really, who would want to kill him?
- Subverted: Everyone but Cole has an alibi at the time of the murder.
- Double Subverted:
- ...But at that time, Fred, Gerald, and Isabelle were all trying to murder Edward as well.
- Never the Obvious Suspect
- Parodied: Edward is brought back from the dead, so they can figure out who killed him... and even he doesn't know.
- Zig-Zagged:
- Averted: Edward is murdered. Cole has no alibi, and a damn good motive. Cole winds up in jail. Case closed.
- Enforced: Edward was The Scrappy.
- Lampshaded:Cop: "Edward is dead?"Cop 2: "Yes...but considering what kind of a person he was, it shouldn't be surprising that we have several very likely suspects."
- Invoked: Edward gets as much people to hate him as possible.
- Implied: After the murder, Officer Ohara (who is in charge of the investigation) is seen leaving through a mountain of folders.
- Exploited: Cole realizes how much others hate Edward, so he takes advantage of it by pulling off his plan when the others do.
- Defied: Cole just admits that he did it, believing he will get a light sentence for not making the police take the time to unravel this mess, and because nobody liked Edward anyway.
- Discussed:Henry: "Did you hear Edward was murdered? Good thing we have an effective police force to solve it."Janine: Don't get your hope up just yet. With how he acted he could have been done in by anyone in town."
- Conversed: "Three hundred and twenty people trying to kill Edward at the same time? There's "making the murder mystery an interesting conundrum" and there's "what the crap, writers!?"
- Deconstructed: Alice, Bob, Cole, and Darrell are all arrested and found guilty for attempted murder, because the police can't be bothered to figure out who exactly did it.
- Reconstructed: It is later revealed that Cole was the one who actually killed Edward after all. They extend his sentence accordingly.
