Go To

Basic Trope: Someone makes a pun and the characters who hear it are annoyed by it.

  • Straight: Bob makes a pun. Alice groans.
  • Exaggerated:
  • Downplayed: Bob makes a pun. Alice cringes slightly, but nothing more.
  • Justified: Alice has been previously established to be a humorless and easily annoyed person that doesn't like jokes in general, but especially puns.
  • Inverted: Bob makes a pun. Alice admits that that was one of the best puns she has ever heard.
  • Subverted: Bob makes a pun. Alice starts booing him, but then begins to laugh despite herself.
  • Double Subverted: Alice recomposes herself and says "okay, but that was still terrible."
  • Parodied: The pun is so bad that a character calls out the writer(s) for making them say that.
  • Zig-Zagged: Bob makes a pun. Alice starts booing, but then she starts laughing, but then she starts to throw punches at Bob even as she continues to laugh. After Bob dodges her fists for long enough, Alice recomposes herself, saying "okay, I admit I found that a little funny. But that's on me, it was still a bad pun and I would not recommend making that pun to anyone else."
  • Averted:
    • Bob makes a pun. Alice finds the pun genuinely funny and laughs.
    • Bob makes a pun. Alice doesn't react, and when prompted by Bob for a reaction, simply shrugs and says "eh, I didn't like it that much."
  • Lampshaded: ???
  • Invoked: ???
  • Exploited: ???
  • Defied: Bob avoids making puns, knowing this will make Alice madder and madder with each one.
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: "Isn't it kinda weird that in TV shows the characters react so strongly to what're just mediocre puns?"
  • Implied: Bob makes a pun to Alice. The story immediately jumps to a later scene with Bob and Charlie. Charlie asks him where Alice went, and Bob says "I don't want to talk about it."
  • Deconstructed: Bob takes Alice's reaction more seriously than she intended, and stops making jokes around her. As Alice actually did appreciate Bob's sense of humor, this saddens her.
  • Reconstructed: Alice reassures Bob that her exaggerated reactions are simply her way of appreciating Bob's puns. They return to their regular dynamic.
  • Played for Laughs: ???
  • Played for Drama: ???
