Basic Trope: A woman is pregnant and instead of announcing her pregnancy, lets the dad take a hint by knitting baby clothes.

  • Straight: Alice is pregnant. Instead of telling Bob, she hints her news to him by knitting baby clothes and winking.
  • Exaggerated: Alice just casts on one stitch and Bob says "You're pregnant?"
  • Downplayed:
    • It takes Bob a while to figure out why Alice would be knitting baby clothes, but he does figure out.
    • Alice isn't pregnant herself, but is knitting for a friend or relative who is expecting and does so in the presence of the friend or relative's husband.
  • Justified:
    • Alice and Bob had sex while Alice was fertile, and Alice knits a lot. What she was knitting was clearly a baby sock and Alice and Bob don't know any babies....yet.
    • Alice is so looking forward to being a mother that she can't wait for her child to be born before knitting clothes for the baby, which she considers more indicative of how much she loves her child than simply buying baby clothes.
  • Inverted:
    • Alice announces her pregnancy by asking Bob to knit a baby sock.
    • Alice knits something in anticipation of a loved one passing away.
  • Subverted: It turns out that Alice is not pregnant.
  • Double Subverted:
    • She had a miscarriage.
    • She's planning on adopting.
    • Her friend Carol is pregnant.
    • She did think she was pregnant.
  • Parodied: When Alice sees Bob knitting, she thinks he's having a Mister Seahorse pregnancy.
  • Averted: Knitting does not equal pregnancy, nobody gets pregnant, or no ladies knit.
  • Zigzagged: Alice is seen knitting a baby sock. The whole episode is about whether or not she is pregnant.
  • Enforced:
    • It's a show set in the olden days when baby clothes were not as easily bought.
    • "Anyone would just buy baby clothes, but we want to show how happy Alice is towards becoming a mother and to demonstrate how far she's willing to go in ensuring her baby's needs are met, plus it's already part of her character that she enjoys making materials herself, so let's have her knit once she learns she's pregnant."
  • Lampshaded: "Why do you think I'm pregnant? I'm just knitting!"
  • Invoked: Carol says to Alice "Just knit baby socks in front of him. He'll take the hint."
  • Exploited: Alice falsely convinces Bob she's pregnant by knitting.
  • Defied: Alice decides to tell Bob she's pregnant first and then start knitting the baby clothes.
  • Discussed: "Are you pregnant?" "Why?" "You seem to be knitting a baby sock there", and this leads to a whole conversation.
  • Conversed: "You know that thing where a woman hints to her partner she's pregnant by knitting baby clothes in front of him?"
  • Implied: At the beginning of a movie, Alice is seen knitting. The next scene cuts to a few months later and there's a baby.
  • Deconstructed: People think all women who are knitting are pregnant, so even pregnant women avoid knitting to prevent nosy people asking if they're pregnant.
  • Reconstructed: Only if they are knitting baby clothes.
  • Played For Laughs:
    • "Why do you think I'm pregnant? I'm just knitting! But I am, though."
    • Alice is hilariously bad at knitting.
  • Played For Drama: Alice's abusive husband Bob withholds money from her, so she can only make clothes for her baby by knitting them. However, she doesn't want him to find out that she's pregnant, so she must knit in total secrecy.
