Basic Trope: A character realizes they were a Jerkass.
- Straight: Alice realizes how vain, insensitive, and unsympathetic she is towards others.
- Exaggerated:
- Alice is overly competitive and cannot congratulate other's achievements without choking back jealousy. She's known this for a while and, while she hates it and tries not to, she can't stop.
- Alice is abusive and spiteful, but soon she realizes how people were hurt by her horrible behavior.
- Heel Realization.
- Downplayed: Alice realizes that her blunt attitude has rubbed people the wrong way.
- Justified: Alice wasn't aware of how bad her behavior was until now.
- Inverted: Alice realizes that she was nice.
- Subverted: Alice realizes that she's a jerk until she returns to insulting others...
- Double Subverted: ...but then she immediately regrets it and sincerely apologizes.
- Parodied: ???
- Zig Zagged: In some days, Alice feels bad for mistreating people, but in other days, she doesn't care and continues to mistreat them.
- Averted:
- Alice doesn't realize that she's a jerk.
- Alice knows she's a jerk and confirms it.
- Enforced: "Let's try to redeem Alice and humanize her character."
- Lampshaded: "It took you that long for you to realize you were a jerk?"
- Invoked: Betty calls out Alice for being a jerk.
- Exploited: ???
- Defied:
- "Why should I feel bad for mistreating these morons?"
- "So what if people think I'm full of shit? Doesn't mean that they aren't, themselves."
- Discussed: ???
- Conversed: "So Alice realizes that she's a total bitch. You think she'll compensate for her behavior in the next episode?"
- Deconstructed: Even if Alice realizes that she was a jerk, her attempts to make up for it are ignored and outright rejected.
- Reconstructed: Those who rejected her attempts at redemption eventually give Alice a chance to make amends.
- Played For Drama: Alice realizes she was a jerk, and enjoys it. As a result, her callousness increases to the point where even other jerks finds her abhorrent.
