Basic Trope: Cuban cigars are valuable contraband or otherwise difficult to get (depending on the setting) so obtaining one is evidence of money or connections.

  • Straight: In the 1990s American movie Troper Tales, Dominic, a businessman suspected to be involved in shady dealings, offers his potential partners Cuban cigars.
  • Exaggerated: Every rich and/or shady character in the work explicitly smokes Cuban cigars.
  • Downplayed: ???
  • Justified: ???
  • Inverted:
    • Cuban characters value cigars from the Dominican Republic the most.
    • A Flashback Episode depicts Boris, in the days he was still a citizen of the USSR, being offered a contraband Jamaican Cigar by a shady Soviet official.
  • Subverted:
    • By Cuban, Dominic means he gets them from a cigar maker in Little Havana, Miami.
    • After Dominic does his offer, Troper Tales is revealed to be set in Canada, where buying them is legal.
  • Double Subverted: By Cuban, Dominic means he gets them from a cigar maker in Little Havana, Miami...Except said cigar maker actually does smuggle them from Cuba.
  • Parodied: Troper Tales is a science fiction movie, and any cigars from Earth are a valuable offworld import on other planets... but for some inexplicable reason, Cuban cigars are considered to be rare and valuable while those from other countries are not.
  • Zig-Zagged: ???
  • Averted:
    • Nobody is seen smoking cigars.
    • Dominic's cigars are Honduran in origin.
  • Enforced: Dominic doesn't seem shady enough, so the editor suggests clarifying that his cigars are Cuban.
  • Lampshaded: "Cuban cigars? How did he even get those?"
  • Invoked: In order to make himself seem more intimidating to his potential partners, Dominic takes a page from the movies he's seen and smuggles in some cigars from Cuba, intending to offer them to potential partners.
  • Exploited: Dominic is in fact involved in various shady and illegal dealings, and the law enforcement can't prove those - but they can prove he's been smuggling/buying Cuban cigars because he keeps offering them to everyone he's making deals with.
  • Defied: Dominic refuses to smuggle cigars from Cuba even knowing how cool it will make him look.
  • Discussed: "Cuban cigars? What are you, some kind of mafioso from the movies?"
  • Conversed: "If you wanna make your character look shady, just hand them a cigar and have them say it was flown straight from Havana."
