Playing With / Item Farming

Go To

Basic Trope: The act of acquiring/collecting a large quantity of certain items in a video game for use or selling.

  • Straight: In Tales of Troperia XVIII, Item Crafting the Gaia Blade requires 50 Bear Asses which can only be acquired by killing bears.
  • Exaggerated: It requires 500 Bear Asses.
  • Downplayed: It requires five Bear Asses.
  • Justified: The blade's strength comes from the life force of the bears you slew to craft it.
  • Inverted:
  • Subverted: Bears stop dropping asses once you have 10, so you'll need to get them from other sources like the in-game item auction or trading with other players.
  • Double Subverted: ...though you can just give them to the item crafting smith next to the forge once you hit 10 and they will still count toward the amount needed. Bears will once again start dropping them after.
  • Parodied:
  • Zig-Zagged: The Bear Asses are worthless on their own, but can be traded to NPCs and other player for more valuable items, like raw smithing materials. However, the game has a Player-Generated Economy, so if you trade in too many Bear Asses, they'll decrease in value, making it harder to get the materials you need to craft the blade and encouraging you to hunt/gather other items as well.
  • Averted: Enemies do not drop anything, so there is nothing to farm.
  • Enforced: The game is an MMO and the players need a source of items to use and sell, so the producers require that enemies drop something, which players then farm.
  • Lampshaded: Party member Quirby says after the party kills their 10th bear "I like killing bears as much as the next guy, but shouldn't we be out saving the world from something a little more threatening?"
  • Exploited:
  • Defied:
  • Discussed:
  • Conversed:
  • Deconstructed: There are only a certain number of bears in the game world and once you kill them, they don't respawn. You are effectively driving them to extinction.
  • Reconstructed:
  • Played for Laughs:
  • Played for Drama:
