Basic Trope: A character hears a word/phrase and assumes it has to do with food.
- Straight: Bob uses the word "expression" in a sentence, and Alice asks him "What's an expression? Does it taste good?"
- Exaggerated:
- The word used doesn't even sound like something edible at all, and Alice is still convinced it has to do with food.
- Alice asks "What is ____? Can I eat it?" in response to any word she's unfamiliar with.
- Downplayed: The word used can actually sound like a type of food, and Alice briefly wonders if it might taste good.
- Justified:
- Alice is The Ditz, an Extreme Omnivore, and/or is a Big Eater. Or is just very hungry but trying not to show it.
- Alice and Bob were just having a conversation involving food.
- The word really did sound like something edible.
- Alice is not a native speaker, and the unfamiliar word in her second language sounds similar to a food from her home country.
- Inverted: Alice hears a word that actually does involve food, but assumes it's something non-food related.
- Subverted: When Alice says "Can I eat it?", she is not referring to what Bob just said - she just happened to remember that she brought a sandwich and wondered if Bob would mind her eating while he exposits.
- Double Subverted: Later on in the exposition dump, Alice responds with "I bet that would taste good too..." to a word she doesn't recognise.
- Parodied: Alice is unfamiliar with a kind of vehicle and asks if it is a food. Unfortunately she is talking to an Extreme Omnivore who answers "yes", takes a chunk out of said vehicle, and starts chewing on the metal to Alice's great confusion.
- Zig-Zagged: A thought cloud shows that she thought out loud about a different kind of sandwich.
- Averted: Nobody asks if words they're unfamiliar with have to do with food.
- Enforced:
- To add a joke to the scene.
- An Establishing Character Moment for Alice's love of food.
- Lampshaded: "How does that sound like a foodstuff at all, Alice?"
- Invoked: ???
- Exploited: The word Bob said was actually a sexual euphemism. While Alice isn't sure what body part he was referring to exactly, she says "Is it something I can eat?" in an attempt to flirt with Bob, who happens to have a preference for Dumb Blondes.
- Defied: Bob immediately informs Alice of what the word means instead of letting her assume it has something to do with food.
- Discussed: ???
- Conversed: "Why do so many characters assume that a word they've never heard of has to do with food?"
