Basic Trope: The game messes up your view or controls.
- Straight: Your view is partially obscured.
- Exaggerated:
- Your view is completely obscured, the GUI elements get rearranged, and your controls are randomly swapped.
- Your view is constantly obscured by seizure-inducing Epileptic Flashing Lights.
- Mission Control Is Off Its Meds
- Through the Eyes of Madness
- Downplayed:
- Your view is slightly obscured.
- In the corner of the screen, something shows up trying to distract you.
- Justified:
- Something got on your visor or car windshield.
- The main character is hallucinating.
- The main character is gradually going insane and the altered interface is a case of Through the Eyes of Madness.
- A villain has an in-universe ability to attack through the fourth wall.
- Inverted:
- You mess up your opponents' view.
- You gain X-Ray Vision and a Mini Map.
- Subverted: You are able to easily clean the screen...
- Double Subverted: ...but there is another layer blocking your view after that.
- Parodied: The screen is blocked by a message saying "You can't see! Ha-ha!"
- Zig Zagged: There is stuff blocking the screen, which is easily cleaned off. But more things keep blocking your view.
- Averted: Your view or controls are not messed up.
- Enforced:
- "We should make the game more challenging. I know! Let's mess with the player's view and/or controls!"
- The producers, for the purpose of Gameplay and Story Integration, demanded that the interface be made diegetic.
- Lampshaded: "Why can't I see or move as well?"
- Invoked: The player goes into an area full of dirt being thrown around.
- Exploited: The player wipes off her face and uses the dirt to get the enemies back later on.
- Defied: The player avoids anything that can block the view.
- Discussed: "Why are you limping around? Is something wrong with your vision or your movement?"
- Conversed: "Why does this game always mess with my view?"
- Implied: Not applicable. This trope can only be shown.
- Deconstructed: The player keeps dying because they couldn't see enemies/obstacles or avoid them properly and as a result, they give up on the game and word spreads about the how unfair the game is, causing sales to drop off.
- Reconstructed:
- The developers release a patch adding items/buffs to clean and/or protect your view.
- Alternatively, some people take it as another challenge to overcome.
- Played For Laughs: Pies fly into the player's face and/or hit the camera.
- Played For Drama: When the viewpoint character is exposed to triggering situations to the shaking, audio hallucinations and the pounding of their heartbeat, and traumatic scenes cutting in.
