Basic Trope: The inheritance is more trouble than it's worth.

  • Straight: Bob inherits a mansion from his Great Aunt Alice. It's haunted, and the ghosts are none too friendly.
  • Exaggerated: The house is not only infested with death traps and demons that constantly try to kill Bob and his family, it also lacks the most basic utilities such as water and electricity, and every cupboard is filled to brim with snakes and spiders.
  • Downplayed: The house has a problem with mice and spiders.
  • Justified:
    • Alice hadn't done much in the way of upkeep.
    • The house is over a site such as an Indian Burial Ground.
  • Inverted: Bob is supposed to inherit a landfill, which he rejects. The property goes to his cousin Carl instead, who discovers a chest full of gold and other valuables buried underneath the trash. Bob regrets his decision to pass over his inheritance.
  • Subverted:
    • The house Bob inherits seems dilapidated, but the interior is fine, and with a few renovations, the house will be perfect.
    • The house is haunted, but the ghosts are friendly and helpful to Bob.
  • Double Subverted:
    • The house immediately falls apart when Bob tries to replace the roof, seriously injuring him or his contractors.
    • Or so they seem at first. The moment Bob accidentally offends them, they turn into murderous monsters.
  • Parodied: ???
  • Zig-Zagged: Bob inherits an old, dilapidated Big Fancy House. He tries to renovate it but discovers that the cost of renovation is much higher than what he can afford. He decides to sell off the property instead, and it seems that he can benefit from Aunt Alice's inheritance after all... until the house collapses just a week after the new owner moved in, and Bob loses all his wealth to pay for the damages and court settlement.
  • Averted: Bob inherits nothing from Alice.
  • Enforced: ???
  • Lampshaded: "I should have rejected this inheritance. It's more trouble than it's worth."
  • Invoked: Great Aunt Alice dislikes Bob, but doesn't want to leave him out of her will for some reason, so she purposely gives him her worst assets to make him suffer for the inheritance.
  • Exploited: Bob decides to make the best of the situation by turning his haunted house into a tourist hotspot.
  • Defied:
    • Since Bob knows he won't be able to keep up with the upkeep of a mansion, or the property taxes, he turns the inheritance down, or simply sells the house "as is."
    • Before Alice passed away, she knew she was getting to where she was having a hard time taking care of herself. She sold her mansion and checked herself into a nursing home.
  • Discussed: "Alice must have given me this in her will because she hated it, since this place sucks!"
  • Conversed: ???

Why do I have to inherit this stupid page? Is there a way to sell it off to someone else?
