Basic Trope: Bob is described as being deformed when they look more or less ordinary.

  • Straight: Bob, who looks virtually indistinguishable from any other character, is described as deformed.
  • Exaggerated:
    • Bob is described as "hideous" because they have a scar on their eye.
    • Bob is treated as The Grotesque and has their face covered at all times to spare everyone else the horror... until the mask comes off. Cue The Reveal that they're actually achingly beautiful.
  • Downplayed: Bob isn't exactly pleasant to look at, but "hideous" is a stretch.
  • Justified:
    • Bob is surrounded by jerkasses who view even the slightest difference as a deformity, so it's really just a commentary on how much of an asshole those around are.
    • Bob is insecure about their own appearance and exaggerates their "ugliness" compared to others (who may not be any more beautiful) as a form of self-deprecation.
  • Inverted: Informed Attractiveness, especially when Bob being described as handsome or gorgeous isn't particularly so.
  • Subverted: The ordinary appearance is revealed to be fake, and Bob really is deformed.
  • Double Subverted: ...But then that turns out to be fake as well, and Bob still looks more or less ordinary.
  • Parodied: ??
  • Zig Zagged: ??
  • Averted: Bob isn't described as deformed.
  • Enforced:
    • The animation style doesn't allow for the gradation of deformity that Bob requires.
    • The animation studio's quality is so lousy that you can't tell deformity from animation error.
    • The producers make Bob more attractive without altering the script.
  • Lampshaded: "You call that a deformity?"
  • Invoked: ??
  • Exploited: ??
  • Defied: ??
  • Deconstructed: Because everybody treats them like a hideous freak, Bob develops severe body dysmorphia and falls into self-loathing.
