Playing With / I Take Offense to That Last One

Go To

Basic Trope: A character reacts strongly to the last point, which is often the weakest.

  • Straight: Danny accuses Steve of stealing Alice's car, attempting to run over Bob with it, and littering. Steve says "How DARE you, Danny?! I'd NEVER litter!"
  • Exaggerated: Danny accuses Steve of being a mass murderer, attempting to blow up the world, and jaywalking. Steve then starts screaming like a maniac and yelling at Danny that he wouldn't ever jaywalk.
  • Downplayed: Danny accuses Steve of littering, jaywalking, and leaving the toilet seat up. Steve says that he'd never leave the toilet seat up.
  • Justified:
    • The last point was Steve's Berserk Button.
    • Littering was accidental. Steve is proud of his misdeeds, but would never admit to making a mistake, even a small one.
    • The last one actually is worse than the others for Steve, due to his Blue-and-Orange Morality. For example, the theft and attempted murder were acts of revenge and therefore justified, from his point of view, but littering is a horrendous crime in his culture.
    • Steve didn't actually litter. While he is fine with being called out on what he actually did, he abhors being blamed for things he didn't do.
    • Everyone Has Standards. Steve's is being ecologically aware. He is not okay with people thinking he would be so petty as help ruin Mother Earth.
    • It's not what Steve did. It's how Danny presented it. He probably would be less willing to punch Danny's face over being accused of jaywalking if Danny had not yelled about it and acted like that was the thing that evidenced he is some kind of monster.
  • Inverted:
    • Steve reacts to the strongest point.
    • Steve reacts to all the points except the last/weakest one.
    • Danny presents all of the other evil deeds Steve did in a matter-of-fact barrage of words, but places such a tremendously loud emphasis on Steve's jaywalking that Steve has to show offense.
  • Subverted: Danny says "Steve, you've stolen Alice's car, attempted to run over Bob, and littered at the park." Steve doesn't react.
  • Double Subverted: "Oh, I'm not done! You've also jaywalked this morning!" Steve says "I'd NEVER jaywalk, Danny!" as a response.
  • Parodied:
  • Zig Zagged: Sometimes Steve reacts to the last point, sometimes he doesn't.
  • Averted: Steve doesn't react to the last point.
  • Enforced: Rule of Funny
  • Lampshaded: "Good thing to see that your priorities are straight."
  • Invoked: Danny knows that accusing Steve of things like jaywalking and littering will anger him, so he puts an accusation of littering into his "The Reason You Suck" Speech.
  • Exploited: Steve knows that Danny will accuse him of anything and everything to try to rile him up or get him in trouble, so he tries to perform Refuge in Audacity by acting upset about the thing Danny was not expecting him to get upset about.
  • Defied: Steve calms himself down before reacting.
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: "I wonder why Steve reacted like that."
  • Implied: Upon being accused of littering, the smug smirk leaves Steve's face.
