Go To

Basic Trope: A character wants to feel loved.

  • Straight: Bill, a lonely man, wants to be loved by Audrey.
  • Exaggerated: Bill will do anything to win Audrey's love, or any kind of affection in general.
  • Downplayed: Bill does fine by himself, but feels very lonely and has no one to confide in.
  • Justified:
    • Love is an important part of life, and living without it can be a terrible thing.
    • Bill grew up in a bad household, and wants to make up for it by having a genuine, loving relationship with someone.
  • Inverted: Bill doesn't want to be loved for any reason by anyone. He considers it a liability.
  • Subverted: Bill wants love... only because it can be used as a bargaining chip to get what he really wants: power over someone else.
  • Double Subverted: Bill comes to realize how wonderful love really is and rejects his pursuit of power.
  • Parodied: Bill wears a literal heart-shaped patch on his sleeve. Every time he feels loved, he adds a stitch to it.
  • Zig Zagged: Bill says he wants love, but after experiencing it, decides it isn't for him and comes to terms with his loneliness.
  • Averted: Bill neither wants nor avoids love.
  • Enforced: As per the producer's orders, we tweaked Bill's motivation to that of wanting to be loved by someone."
  • Lampshaded: "Man, Bill is the neediest guy I've ever met."
  • Invoked: Bill isn't too focused on love, but his friends think it would be good for him to not be so lonely, so they try pushing him in that direction with subtle hints.
  • Exploited: Catherine uses Bill's desire to be loved to make him a sucker for her aspirations, which mostly involve his money.
  • Defied: Bill avoids love entirely.
  • Discussed: Bill confides in Charlie regarding his desire for love.
  • Conversed: Charlie tells Bill about all the different types of love, expanding Bill's knowledge about what love truly is.
  • Implied: Bill has no one in his life, and recognizes this isn't healthy.
  • Deconstructed: Bill wants to be loved without being lovable in the slightest, making it next to impossible for anyone to do so. He spends his life alone.
  • Reconstructed: Bill comes to realize being loved on your own terms is not an option, and that genuine love demands both give and take. He eventually learns to love others sincerely and without reservation, and in return is loved himself.
