Basic Trope: A member of a species who kills other members of their species.
- Straight: Alice the vampire hunter is also a vampire herself.
- Exaggerated:
- The vast majority of vampire hunters in the setting are vampires themselves.
- Alice Can't Stay Normal; every time she's turned, into a vampire or werewolf or zombie or whatever, she hunts every member of that species down, gets turned back to normal, and then lived her life normally.
- Downplayed: Alice is more of a vigilante in general rather than a vampire hunter specifically, but other vampires are common targets of her wrath
- Justified:
- Alice was a vampire hunter long before becoming a vampire, but in that line of work it's only a matter of time before you're bitten.
- Takes One to Kill One.
- Alice is a Token Heroic Vampire.
- Alice is a Boomerang Bigot.
- Alice had herself turned into a vampire in order to become more powerful, and therefore a more effective vampire hunter.
- Alice is The Atoner, and wants to redeem herself by protecting humans from other vampires.
- Alice is a Defector from Decadence.
- Alice's goal is to drink the blood of other vampires in order to become the most powerful vampire of all.
- Inverted:
- Alice guards and protects other vampires.
- Alice was born a werewolf, and only starts hunting them after being Brought Down to Normal.
- Alice refuses to kill other vampires, but has no problem killing humans.
- Subverted:
- Alice the vampire hunter avoids sunlight, looks longingly at blood, and seems to be unusually strong, but it turns out she's fully human and just weird.
- The reason why Our Vampires Are Different is because it is a title imposed by humans ignorant of the distinctions of any being capable of feeding upon life directly. Alice calls herself a "Lifestreamer" uses rituals for Empathic Healing, and restores herself by draining parasites and pathogens to death and from draining plants. The 'vampires' that she hunts are those who seek to become gods by consuming souls and call themselves The Ascendant.
- Double Subverted: It turns out she was in the early stages of transformation, and is well on her way to becoming a true vampire.
- Parodied:
- EVERY vampire hunter is actually a vampire.
- A serial killer considers herself this for humanity.
- Zig Zagged: Alice the vampire hunter is not a vampire, but a creature that eats them. Then other members of her species turn up, and she decide she should hunt them down as well.
- Averted: Vampires and vampire-hunters don't mix.
- Enforced: The writers wrote themselves into a hole when Vendirck was vamprized last season final, and needed a way to simultaneously maintain and defy the status quo.
- Lampshaded: "So I may be projecting my self loathing a bit…"
- Invoked: Alice injects herself with vampire ichor, in order to gain the power to defeat her vampiric foes.
- Exploited: Alice is not openly a vampire hunter, and uses her "ancestry" to gain the trust of fellow vampires before killing them.
- Defied: Ape Shall Never Kill Ape.
- Discussed: "So you hunt other vampires? How do you avoid hurting yourself when picking up garlic and crosses?"
- Conversed: "A vampire hunting vampires? Never seen that show before."
- Deconstructed:
- Becoming a vampire slowly turns you Always Chaotic Evil. Despite her best attempts to fight it, Alice is Slowly Slipping Into Evil, and in the end she becomes what she hates metaphorically as well as literally.
- Alice was driven to despair because of her transformation, and is subject to a truly ugly mix of Horror Hunger, Internalized Categorism, Boomerang Bigotry, and self loathing. she's rejected by vampires and vampire hunter alike, and isn't really accepted by normal humans either. When she find many of the vampires she slew were not as vile as she thought they were, and that there was nothing inherently evil about the transformation, she's driven to Suicide by Sunlight.
- Reconstructed:
- Becoming a vampire automatically makes you a sociopath; but that doesn't mean you have to act evil. Alice post-transformation abides by a code of Moral Sociopathy that's absolutely ironclad.
- Alice was aware of Van Helsing Hate Crimes and Friendly Neighbourhood Vampires before her transformation: and took pains to make sure the vampires she hunted were deserving of being killed. Becoming a vampire simply made the killing part much more simple.
- Implied: Alice is a vampire who is an ally of the vampire hunters for unknown reasons.
- Played for Laughs: Alice rants about how much she hates vampires. After a long pause, someone reminds Alice she is a vampire.
- Played for Drama: Alice is well aware that she will never fit in among humans, and she hates her vampire dad and all other vampires as a result. She will be a hunter for the rest of her life, and when there are no more other vampires, she'll kill herself to wipe out vampires forever.
