Basic Trope: A character is about to give others a piece of key information, but is killed or otherwise silenced before they can do so.

  • Straight: Gregory is wounded in battle and tries to tell the heroes where to find the weapon that can defeat the Big Bad. He dies before he can finish.
  • Exaggerated:
  • Downplayed: Gregory manages to say all but one crucial detail as he dies.
  • Justified:
    • The location he's trying to say has a name that's very hard to pronounce.
    • A sniper has been watching him and kills him to keep him from revealing the secret.
  • Inverted: As part of their adventures, the heroes temporarily resurrect a skeleton, which immediately informs them of something vitally important.
  • Subverted: Gregory is mortally wounded in battle, but Medic manages to bring him back for long enough to finish.
  • Double Subverted:
    • He doesn't have time to explain how to get through all the traps guarding the weapon.
    • The heroes weren't paying attention and Gregory dies before he can give it a second time.
  • Parodied:
    • Gregory, nearing death, apologizes to the heroes for not having time to tell them where to find the weapon. In a ten-minute soliloquy.
    • Gregory isn't dying at all; he is interrupted to be led away to Cool and Unusual Punishment.
  • Zig-Zagged: Gregory is critically injured early on in a battle. Three times the heroes rush back to check on them and he tries to give them the information, only to be interrupted by attacks on the heroes. Finally, they defeat the attackers and return to Gregory. At first they think he is dead, but he coughs and tries once more to reveal the information, but dies for good before he gets it out. Later, the heroes find a note that seems to reveal the location with Gregory's supplies. But it's gotten wet and they can't read the information there either.
  • Averted:
    • Gregory gives the heroes all crucial information upon first joining them.
    • Gregory never dies.
    • Gregory dies quickly, leaving the heroes completely ignorant of the weapon's existence.
  • Enforced: Rule of Drama
  • Lampshaded: "Damn it! He was about to tell us about that weapon!"
  • Invoked: Jasper knows that Gregory intends to reveal the weapon's location at the end of training. When he sees the training is wrapping up, he alerts the Big Bad, who engineers Gregory's death.
  • Exploited:
    • The Big Bad knows the information Gregory didn't get to tell the heroes, and he makes them doubt themselves by needling them about their ignorance.
    • The Big Bad doesn't need to do anything but keep the heroes away from the weapon.
  • Defied:
  • Discussed: "Don't you hate how people seem to die before they give out one piece of crucial information?"
  • Conversed: ???
  • Implied: While Gregory does get to tell where the weapon is, he still wasn't finished yet after dying, making them wonder if there was something else about it he needed to say.
  • Deconstructed: Because Gregory was killed before he can tell where the weapon is, the heroes are unable to find it.
  • Reconstructed: Gregory actually left a hint in case he couldn't finish, and the heroes realize where it is when remembering his final words.
