Basic Trope: A character hides their race or ethnic background.
- Straight: Rachel, a Jewish woman in a predominantly Christian neighborhood, hides her Jewish heritage.
- Exaggerated: Every non-WASP character hides their background, even from the government.
- Downplayed: Rachel is only half-Jewish, but she hides her copy of the Torah when her neighbor Christine comes to visit.
- Justified:
- Rachel lives in an anti-Semitic area and has to make sure she won't get hate crimed.
- A character is the result of an affair and hides their 'ethnic' side to naturalize.
- Subverted: Rachel doesn't hide her Judaism because the neighbors don't see her religion as a big deal.
- Implied: Rachel usually wears a necklace with the Star of David on it, but she's seen hiding the necklace when going through a certain neighborhood.
