Basic Trope: A character can't shut up about how they're totally not gay.
  • Straight: Gary always introduces Harry as "This is my friend Harry. He's not my partner, thank you very much. It's girls that I looove!"
  • Exaggerated:
    • Every single time Gary says anything remotely flattering about a fellow male character, he follows it up with a lengthy affirmation that he only loves girls.
    • Gary denies being gay while he is in the midst of an orgy with five other men.
    • Gary has a harem consisting of 20 women, but still constantly reminds everyone that he is heterosexual.
  • Downplayed: Gary occasionally denies being gay after obvious Ho Yay moments.
  • Justified:
    • Gary has No Social Skills.
    • Gary is a Camp Straight who lacks romantic success and is annoyed about the assumptions.
    • Gary is gay, but he's still in the closet and not ready to come out yet.
  • Inverted:
  • Subverted:
    • When Gary is introduced, it seems that he's saying "I am not gay" for no reason. However, the complete scene shows that Gary did get accused of being gay beforehand.
    • Gary says he is not gay. He turns out to be a Fish out of Temporal Water, and he uses the word "gay" in its old-school meaning.
  • Double Subverted: However, Gary then spends the rest of the series asserting that he is not gay without any context.
  • Parodied:
    • Gary wears a shirt that says "I'm Not Gay!" on it and introduces himself by saying "Hi, I'm Gary, and I'm not gay!". Then he gives a passionate kiss to Harry.
    • Gary insists that he is not gay despite his extensive history of dating men. He's bisexual, damn it!
  • Zig Zagged: Gary insists he’s heterosexual, but doesn’t have any love interests. Then he gets a crush on Fredericka, but it doesn’t last. Then he starts dating Mary...
  • Averted:
    • Gary is gay, and doesn't bother trying to hide with with Suspiciously Specific Denials.
    • Gary is heterosexual, but only brings it up when it's natural to do so.
  • Enforced:
  • Lampshaded: "Here comes Gary to tell us about how he's totally not gay."
  • Invoked: Fred tells Gary that the best way to avoid being accused of homosexuality is denying it at every opportunity.
  • Exploited: Gary denies being gay just so, at least he hopes, no one would suspect anything when he's actually hooking up with dudes in his apartment without his friends' knowledge.
  • Defied:
    • Gary refuses to clarify his sexuality even when he seems remarkably gay and even if he has to actually stop himself from saying anything. He feels he has nothing to prove and that trying to prove his straightness would only make the situation worse.
    • Gary gets a girlfriend, who tells him that spending time with her is the best way to convince everyone he's not gay.
  • Discussed: "He sure likes to remind people which way he REALLY swings..."
  • Conversed: "I love how that book keeps insisting that Gary is not gay. I wonder if the author is working around censorship."
  • Deconstructed: Gary constantly denies being gay. The other characters treat this as Suspiciously Specific Denial.
  • Played For Drama: Gary lives in a culture where being gay can get you stoned to death. He's justifiably terrified of being Mistaken for Gay.
