Basic Trope: A self-help guru doesn't practice what they preach.

  • Straight: Guru Mr. Myracle is always telling his client Adam to be honest and avoid temptation. Mr. Myracle himself is a Compulsive Liar who buys lottery tickets daily.
  • Exaggerated: Mr. Myracle tells Adam not to cheat on his diet, not to lie, not to get mad over illogical things, and not to oversleep. Mr. Myracle does all of these things on a regular basis.
  • Downplayed: Mr. Myracle tells Adam not to indulge in too many sweets, but Mr. Myracle has a Sweet Tooth himself.
  • Justified: Mr. Myracle figures that his life is so bad because he didn't follow the advice, so he wants to prevent Adam from going down the same path.
  • Inverted: Mr. Myracle's always giving out sensible advice that has led him to happiness, which his patients repeatedly choose to ignore.
  • Subverted: Mr. Myracle tells Adam to be faithful to his girlfriend, but then is caught texting another woman. It turns out he was just Mistaken for Cheating.
  • Double Subverted: Or at least, that was Mr. Myracle's cover-up.
  • Parodied: Mr. Myracle's advice to Adam always ends up being in the "do not [Suspiciously Specific Denial]" category.
  • Averted: Mr. Myracle's advice is something specific to Adam's situation that he does not partake in himself.
  • Enforced: "Wouldn't it be funny if the psychologist told Adam to avoid temptation, but then he was an addict himself?"
  • Lampshaded: "Oh, so Mr. Myracle's telling me to be honest, but guess who didn't tell me the appointment fee upfront?"
  • Invoked: Mr. Myracle tells his clients what they want to hear, regardless of whether or not he does it.
  • Defied: Mr. Myracle tries to put himself in Adam's shoes and live with the changes he himself suggests for a few days.
  • Discussed: "Man, it'd suck if my psychologist turned out to be a hypocrite."

My wisdom for you is to never visit Hapless Self-Help, ever!
