Basic Trope: A contrasting pair of characters whose hair colors represent their opposite personalities.

  • Straight:
  • Exaggerated:
    • Alice and Beatrice are complete opposites in every single way, including hair color.
    • All nice blondes in the setting are paired with snarky, bitter brunettes.
  • Downplayed:
    • Beatrice's hair color is only a few shades darker than Alice's.
    • Alice and Beatrice are mildly different in terms of personality.
  • Justified: Alice and Beatrice's appearance and personalities follow an in-universe Phenotype Stereotype. Alice comes from the North, where the people are generally blond-haired and blue-eyed and has a warm culture that values openness and emotional honesty. Beatrice comes from the South, where dark hair is more prevalent, and whose culture prefers ruthless efficiency over friendship.
  • Inverted:
  • Subverted: Alice isn't a natural blonde, so both she and Beatrice are actually brunette.
  • Double Subverted: It turns out Beatrice is actually blonde and dyes her hair dark, so their hair colors are still opposite.
  • Parodied: Personality in their universe shifts according to one's hair colour. When Alice dyes her hair red, she becomes a Fiery Redhead. Likewise, Beatrice bleaches her hair and mellows out.
  • Zig Zagged: Alice and Beatrice’s hair colors change every episode - sometimes Alice is blonde and Beatrice and brunette, sometimes not.
  • Averted: Alice's and Beatrice's hair colors don't really say anything about them.
  • Enforced: The writer wants a visual shorthand for the characters' personalities, so he settles on opposite hair colors for a pair of Foils.
  • Lampshaded: "It's like Alice's and Beatrice's hair colors line up perfectly with their personalities!"
  • Invoked: Alice dyes her hair blonde to deliberately contrast herself with Beatrice.
  • Exploited: ???
  • Defied: Alice dyes her hair dark so she doesn't contrast with Beatrice so much.
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: "How come the blonde heroine always has a dark-haired Foil?" "I think the hair colors make it easier to distinguish their personalities!"
