Basic Trope: Being filthy, slovenly and vulgar is viewed as the natural state of men (and is thus "manly").
- Straight: Bob is filthy, he never cleans himself, and he has a rather off-color sense of humor.
- Exaggerated: Bob's house has never been cleaned; piles of dirty clothes and rotting food are lying around, and have been for weeks. Bob himself is loathsome, being caked in layers of his own filth, extraordinarily foul-smelling, and unable to speak a sentence without dropping a few expletives or otherwise offensive words.
- Downplayed: Bob has Perma-Stubble and only sweeps once a week, whether the floor needs it or not.
- Justified: Bob recently became divorced, and Alice, his ex-wife, doesn't clean his place or nag him to stay presentable anymore. He considers this to be his natural state.
- Inverted: Bob is spotless, and he is as polite and kind a person as you could ever hope to meet.
- Gender Inverted: Alice is filthy, never cleans herself, and has a bad sense of humor.
- Subverted: We first see Bob this way, but it turns out he's on vacation, and he quickly cleans up when he has to go back to work.
