Basic Trope: A very masculine-looking and/or ugly woman who is portrayed as feminine.
- Straight: Alice is very tall, muscular, and hairy. However, she loves the color pink, is obsessed with dresses and makeup, and otherwise has a lot of stereotypically feminine interests.
- Exaggerated: Alice is so masculine that she gets mistaken for a man on a regular basis, but her personality is extremely girly.
- Downplayed:
- Alice has a few traits that are untypical for a female character (such as a beard) and most of her interests are fairly feminine.
- Tomboy with a Girly Streak
- Justified: Alice gets mistaken for a man quite a bit due to her appearance, so she plays up her feminine traits so people will get her gender correct.
- Inverted:
- Alice has a very girly appearance, but acts like The Lad-ette.
- Brawn Hilda
- Alice looks masculine and muscular, but is portrayed as attractive for it, especially when She Cleans Up Nicely.
- Gender Inverted:
- Bob is really manly-looking, but he has several feminine interests.
- Bob looks really feminine, but he has a highly manly personality.
- Subverted: ???
- Double Subverted: ???
- Parodied: ???
- Zig-Zagged: ???
- Averted: Alice looks relatively feminine, and has feminine interests.
- Enforced: The writers want Alice to be a gonk, but they don't want to insult women's appearances, so they get a man to play her (which of course ends up having its own unfortunate implications).
- Lampshaded: "Everyone mistakes me for a man if I don't wear dresses and makeup."
- Invoked: ???
- Exploited: ???
- Defied: Alice decides she can't pull off femininity, so starts acting traditionally masculine.
- Discussed:
- "Does Alice really think that dress makes her look feminine?"
- "I envy you, Bob. If you wear pink, you get viewed as brave and admirable for it. If I wear pink, I get laughed at and accused of trying too hard."
- Conversed: "Why are mannish-looking femmes always portrayed as ugly and deserving of ridicule? It's a tad transphobic and body-shaming when you think about it."
- Deconstructed: Alice is transgender and hates being viewed as this. It creates a lose/lose situation: if she presents as feminine, she gets mocked as ugly and unwomanly, but if she doesn't, she gets misgendered. This pushes her to get hormone treatment and surgery she may not even want.
