Basic Trope: Grey is associated with unhappiness.

  • Straight: Bob is seen wearing a grey suit and is very upset.
  • Exaggerated:
    • Bob is always seen in grey and has depression.
    • The nation of Troperia is a Crapsack World where the water, the plants, the sun, everything, is grey.
  • Downplayed: Bob has a grey tie on and he is rather bored.
  • Justified: Bob's suit colour changes with his mood.
  • Inverted: Bob is wearing a rainbow suit and is ecstatic.
  • Subverted:
    • Bob only looks sad, he is, in fact, actually enjoying things.
    • Grey is actually Bob's favorite colour. He wears his grey suit to make himself feel better.
  • Double Subverted: He then gets bad news, which really makes him sad.
  • Parodied:
    • People being seen in a grey suit are assumed to be depressed, and get given therapy hotlines on sight.
    • Wearing grey automatically turns you sad and miserable, and removing grey objects from your house can cure depression.
  • Zig-Zagged: Bob uses his grey suit for sad and not sad momentts interchangeably.
  • Averted: Grey is never showed in a gloomy light.
  • Enforced: The author wants to nail in how sad Bob is, so they show him in drab grey.
  • Lampshaded: "Bob, I know you only break out the grey suit when you're down, what's up?"
  • Invoked: Bob wants to convince his therapist that he is very upset, so he wears grey clothes.
  • Exploited: ???
  • Defied: ???
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: ???
  • Implied: Bob is wearing grey a lot and generally looks less happy than he normally does.
