Playing With / Girly Girl with a Tomboy Streak

Go To

Basic Trope: A girly girl/woman with some masculine traits.

  • Straight:
    • Carol is a Proper Lady who likes to get dirty and is a Closet Geek.
    • Carol has a girly appearance, but a tomboyish personality, and her interests are a mixture of girly and tomboyish interests.
  • Exaggerated: Carol is the girliest woman on the planet, yet she still has a very strong interest in stereotypically masculine things, like contact sports and body-building.
  • Downplayed:
    • Carol is more girly than your average female, although it is clear that she is masculine too.
    • Carol is very much a Girly Girl but will kick your ass at Mario Kart.
  • Justified:
    • Carol had a lot of brothers growing up, or she is raised by kindhearted but manly, tough father, so, though she was still girly, she picked up some masculine interests.
    • Carol liking girly things doesn't necessarily prevent her from enjoying masculine things, too.
    • Carol Used to Be a Tomboy, and couldn't quite get rid of all of her tomboyish traits.
  • Inverted: Tomboy with a Girly Streak
  • Gender Inverted Real Men Wear Pink
  • Subverted: Carol seems to have some masculine interests, like fixing cars and reading comic books, but she was only pretending to enjoy some masculine activities because she's worried that people will dismiss her for being too girly.
  • Double Subverted: ...but before long, she realizes that she actually enjoys comic books and repairing cars much more than she expected.
  • Parodied: Carol dresses gender neutral at most times and has rather girly interests, but whenever she works on a car, she's seen in a ridiculously detailed feminine outfit, from Elegant Gothic Lolita to Pretty in Mink to a Fairytale Wedding Dress!
  • Zig Zagged: Sometimes Carol shows her masculine traits, other times she doesn't.
  • Averted:
    • Carol is a straight-up Girly Girl with little to no masculine features.
    • Carol has a mundane array of interests and neither she nor the audience finds her particularly girlish or tomboyish.
  • Enforced:
    • "We need Carol to be approachable by both the female and male demographic, so let's have her be both girly and tomboyish!"
    • The work's demographic is teenage boys, so they create Carol to make boys attracted to her girlish appearance and relate with her interests.
  • Lampshaded: "I really didn't expect Carol, of all people, to be into fixing cars! She's so girly and prim and proper."
  • Invoked: Carol starts practicing for a sport, then she realizes how much she likes it.
  • Exploited: ???
  • Defied: ???
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: ???
  • Deconstructed: Carol's parents are very traditional, and despite her boyish interests, Carol presents herself as a girly girl to avoid disappointing them.
  • Reconstructed: Turns out her parents are perfectly okay with her interests, but never thought to clarify it because they didn't know she was hiding her real self. Once the subject comes up, they encourage her to be herself.
  • Implied: Danny mentions how different Carol's room was from what he expected, but he doesn't elaborate.
