Basic trope: A giant spider.

  • Straight: The spider is about the size of an average adult human.
  • Exaggerated:
    • The spider is about the size of a skyscraper.
    • The spider is about the size of a planet.
    • The spider is about the size of a universe.
    • The spider is about the size of a multiverse.
    • The spider is about the size of an omniverse.
    • The spider is about the size of reality itself.
  • Downplayed: The spider is about the size of the largest real-life spiders, such as the Goliath birdeater or giant huntsman spider.
  • Justified:
    • The spider comes from a planet with more oxygen than Earth.
    • The spider comes from a time period when Earth had more oxygen.
    • The spider comes from a laboratory, and was heavily experimented on, resulting in a much larger size.
    • The spider is blessed with great size by some higher beings. "Blessed" is up for debate when the Square-Cube Law is brought up.
    • It's a Spider God's non-eldritch appearance.
  • Inverted:
    • The spider is about the size of Patu digua, the smallest spider species.
    • The spider is about the size of a speck of dirt.
    • The spider is about the size of an atom.
    • The spider is about the size of something you'd have to use Planck units to measure.
  • Subverted: The spider is initially shown to be large. However, it turns out that the spider was in a miniature diorama, and the real spider isn't that big.
  • Double Subverted: The spider is initially shown to be large, but it turns out that the spider was in a miniature diorama. However, the spider in the diorama also is a miniature, and the actual spider is large.
  • Parodied: ???
  • Zig Zagged: The size of the spider fluctuates each time it appears.
  • Averted: The spider is about the size of most real-life spiders.
  • Enforced: ???
  • Lampshaded: "Holy shit, that's one massive spider!"
  • Invoked: A bunch of bored (or possibly immature) scientists decide to experiment on a batch of ordinary spiders, making them grow to large sizes, just so they can watch their new monstrosities battle to the death.
  • Exploited: Alice and Bob manage to tame the spider and harvest its silk for great profit.
  • Defied: Whatever higher forces out there simply keep the Spider Size Limit at "Theraphosa Blondi" (aka Goliath Birdeater) size, the current biggest Spider Size to date.
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: ???
  • Implied: Bob claims to have witnessed a human-sized spider, but we never actually get to see it.
  • Played for Laughs: The spider is friendly but has the behavior of a dog, considering it's just as big as one. Alice sometimes has to scold the spider with a rolled-up newspaper when it gets silk all over Bob when playing with him, even going far as to say: "Bad Spidey! Bad!"
  • Played for Horror: Done as is.
  • Deconstructed: A bigger-than-normal spider (normal as in Goliath Birdeater size) has to deal with the Square-Cube Law and a constant food stream lest its owner forgets to feed them and it dies of starvation.
  • Reconstructed: Whoever makes the Giant Spider makes it so that it doesn't have to deal with the above problems.
