Basic Trope: The characters are shown as animals, but are actually humans.

  • Straight: The series finale of Animal Buddies actually shows that the characters only appear to be animals, and are actually humans.
  • Exaggerated: Animal Buddies involves a bunch of characters that are drawn as completely normal animals that do normal animal things, but somehow they're actually humans.
  • Downplayed: The characters are drawn as Beast Men or have some Little Bit Beastly traits, though the characters are actually just normal people.
  • Justified: All the anthro characters are literally descended from human ancestors, and not enough generations have passed for the differences to become a wedge issue.
  • Inverted: The characters appear to be humans, but are actually animals.
  • Subverted: It turns out to be a case of Call a Rabbit a "Smeerp"; the characters are of a furry species, and are considered such in-universe, but are simply called "humans".
  • Double Subverted: ???
  • Parodied: The camera that films the show has an actual setting that makes everyone look like animals.
  • Zig-Zagged: ???
  • Averted:
    • The characters are humans and are established as such.
    • The characters are animals and are very clearly established as such, such as by doing things that would be impossible for a human.
  • Enforced:
    • The artist finds that Furries Are Easier to Draw, but the writer wrote a story that involves completely regular humans, and this was the compromise.
    • The animals are used as a metaphor in some way.
  • Lampshaded: One character confuses another for an animal because it's dark and they can't see. The other replies, "I'm not an animal, I'm a human. Animals don't talk or wear clothes, silly."
  • Invoked: ???
  • Exploited: ???
  • Defied: ???
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: ???
  • Implied: The work involves animals, but there are little to no furry reminders or other indications, and the story would be pretty much the same if you made everyone humans instead. However, the writers of the work have not confirmed if the characters are actually animals or not.
