Basic Trope: Snarky first-person narrator.

  • Straight: Alice narrates the story in first person, and is snarky.
  • Exaggerated: Alice narrates the story in first person, and is incredibly snarky.
  • Downplayed: Alice narrates the story in first person, and is occasionally snarky.
  • Justified: Alice is both a character and a narrator. She is snarky to other characters within the story, so it makes sense that she’s snarky to the audience too.
  • Inverted:
  • Subverted: The prologue’s narration is very snarky, but then the first chapter’s narration is not snarky at all.
  • Double Subverted: The prologue is actually the climax of the book. The Alice becomes increasingly snarky as the story progresses thanks to Character Development. By the end of the book, she's once again as snarky as she was during the prologue.
  • Parodied:
    • Alice is yelling her narration out loud, much to the other characters' confusion.
    • Alice tries to be snarky, but all of her remarks are either Captain Obvious statements or blatantly wrong.
  • Zig Zagged: See Double Subverted point above.
  • Averted:
    • The story is narrated in third person.
    • Alice narrates the story in first person, but is not snarky.
  • Enforced: ???
  • Lampshaded: After a snarky rant, Alice points out that she might have overdone her sarcasm and promises to tone it down.
  • Invoked: ???
  • Exploited: ???
  • Defied: "You're probably expecting snarky narration, but I'm not going to use that."
  • Discussed: "Wow, Alice sure has a lot to say about everything." "I know, right?"
  • Conversed: "I just read that book narrated by Alice. It's more snark than action."
  • Played For Drama: Alice uses sarcasm to cope with her difficult life.
