Basic Trope: The traditional portrayal of Hell as a fiery place of eternal torment.
- Straight: Bob goes to Hell, and is thrown into a lake of molten lava.
- Exaggerated: Then fished out, Impaled with Extreme Prejudice, skinned, dunked back in the lava pit, thrown into sulfuric acid, and given an atomic wedgie. And that’s after he was mutilated and stabbed dozens of times.
- Downplayed: The torment is not eternal, although it may last for a long time and/or feel like eternity.
- Justified: Hell takes on A Form You Are Comfortable With... OK, Comfortable isn't the right word, more like Uncomfortable With.
- Inverted:
- Bob goes to Fluffy Cloud Heaven.
- Hell is freezing cold.
- Subverted:
- Bob goes to Hell, but it's not so bad.
- Hell exists in this story, but it means "eternal separation from God," not a literal place.
- Double Subverted:
- It's an Ironic Hell
- Bob ends up with other people who are in the same boat, and frequent wars happen that involve arson, people being thrown into lava, or sometimes (already dead) people being so depressed that they're Driven to Suicide (but never succeed because they're already dead), for all eternity. It's the ultimate Wretched Hive.
- Alternatively, Bob is completely alone for all eternity and ends up going crazy as a result.
- ... except that it turns out one isn't really separated from God (KJV).
- Parodied:
- On top of all of the above happening under "Exaggerated," Bob is handcuffed to his bitchy mother-in-law.
- It's revealed that it's all fake, just for the tourists.
- Hell is actually Heaven's heating system.
- Zig Zagged: ???
- Averted:
- Bob goes to Heaven.
- The afterlife Bob goes to is just a generic world of the dead where everyone ends up.
- Or, there is no afterlife, just The Nothing After Death.
- Enforced: The traditional view of Hell, that is probably familiar to the audience.
- Lampshaded: "...To Hell, where you will drink naught but burning lava and eat naught but burning coals..."
- Invoked: Hell is created along with the earth, and it's created as a firey pit.
- Exploited: Charlie the caveman is in search of fire, so he deliberately acts bad so that he could find it.
- Defied: God makes sure nobody ever goes to Hell at all.
- Discussed: "So... If I'm bad, I get thrown into a volcano?
- Conversed: "Actually, the whole fire and brimstone thing is Word of Dante."
