Basic Trope: A character shows how powerful they are by performing an extremely destructive feat with no effort.
- Straight: Bob flicking his finger is strong enough to knock someone across the room.
- Exaggerated:
- Bob flicking his finger is powerful enough to completely reduce the Earth to a barren, uninhabitable roasted wasteland, or, in worst case scenario, cause the planet to explode. Or, the finger poke is used to unleash an Eldritch Abomination that proceeds to wreak havoc on his foe and the local surroundings. Or, the finger poke creates a black hole which consumes the entire solar system Bob lives in.
- Bob's finger poke turns his victim's body inside out.
- Bob's poke is strong enough to either send his foe flying into orbit, or sent flying around the world right back to where Bob is.
- Bob gently poking someone causes the universe to disappear and causes God to die.
- Downplayed: Bob lightly touches someone, and they double over and yell in pain.
- Justified:
- Bob spent decades training to be that powerful, or got this power from a magical source.
- Alternatively, Bob is from another planet with much, much stronger gravity, and his strength is proportionate to the gravity of the planet, giving the impression of him being far stronger than he really is on a world with much lighter gravity.
- He hits someone in a pressure point. In real life, getting hit there hard enough can kill you.
- Inverted: Bob does a giant punch attack and it barely harms an ant.
- Subverted:
- The finger poke ends up harming Bob more than the foe its used against.
- Alternatively, a failed use of the finger poke could be used to establish how strong this new foe is compared to Bob's already impressive strength.
- Double Subverted: But then, Bob decides to stop toying around and initiates a Limit Break, allowing him to effortlessly take down his foe in a surprise move.
- Parodied:
- Bob flicking his finger at someone turns them into a cloud of pink flower petals.
- Combine this trope with Does Not Know His Own Strength and you get instant (morbid) hilarity as Bob turns everyone around him into Pink Mist while performing mundane actions. Even better if he Apologises a Lot OR if he's an Invincible Incompetent who's completely unaware of the destruction he causes.
- A seven foot tall, testosterone poisoned, insurmountable muscleman is reduced to a fetal positioned crybaby just by Bob poking him in the stomach. And as it turns out, said muscleman was pretty much playing along; The finger poke didn't actually do much aside from make the whole fight look completely riduclous.
- Zig-Zagged: The finger poke proves to be a useless move, so Bob just opts for a successful Groin Attack on his foe instead.
- Averted: Bob shows discretion, restraint and humility by not doing it.
- Enforced: Super strong characters are required to do this to humble a seemingly larger and stronger, wrong-headed rival.
- Lampshaded: "Whoa, I didn't know you were that strong!"
- Invoked: Bob trained to get that powerful so he wouldn't have to put up with people who are seemingly stronger than him talking down to him.
- Exploited:
- A character who gets his power from the damage he takes has Bob do the finger poke to him, so that he can secretively get stronger while Bob has the impression of effortlessly bringing him down.
- Also, Bob's opponent uses the chances he gets to experience or see Bob do this in action in order to understand just what force he's up against.
- The villain tries to pull a Wounded Gazelle Gambit after Bob does this to him, to make the villain seem like the victim and Bob look like a sadistic bully.
- Defied: "I'd love to use my move to send this guy flying, but what if this guy ended up falling onto someone? Better hold back..."
- Discussed: "Remember the look on that guy's face when I flicked him right across the room?"
- Conversed: "You see, strong characters do this to establish not only how strong they are, but also show how awesome them are."
- Implied: Is hinted that an otherwise meek character has done this off-screen to a foe.
- Deconstructed:
- Bob's finger poke is liable to cause collateral damage to people and buildings nearby, and he has no Hero Insurance to fall back on.
- Alternatively, the finger poke is a representation that if Bob's finger poke alone is that powerful, then if Bob unleashed his full power, it would be catastrophic.
- Bob's finger poke may accidentally kill his foe, either because Bob didn't know his own strength, or the mook was much weaker than he looked.
- The villain Bob does the finger poke on happens to be a weak mook, and the poke would have no effect on a much stronger foe.
- Also, what other people percieve as Bob having incredible power in such a move alone is seen as a trivial, weak move among Bob's own kind.
- Bob has to be very careful with the finger poke, as he has little to no control over his strength, and could easily hurt someone by accident due to it.
- Reconstructed:
- But, Bob knows to only do the finger poke in remote areas when no one outside of his foe is around to be harmed indirectly by it.
- Alternatively, he learns to only use it as a last resort.
- Played For Laughs: Bob does this frequently to all of the people he hates or have tormented him.
- Played For Drama:
- The finger poke drives Bob into an existential crisis, that having so much power could make him dangerous to be around those who he loves.
- The poke can be used to start off a tense fight scene or conclude a Let's Get Dangerous! moment.
- Untwisted: Bob seemingly fails at doing the finger poke and breaks his arm out doing it...but then it turns out his real power can only be unlocked by extreme pain, allowing him to deliver the real deal.
- Necessary Weasel: The finger poke has to be done to establish to newcomers that this guy is supposed to be a very powerful character.
