Basic Trope: Hand meets forehead as an expression of dismay or exasperation.
- Straight: Bob, after hearing a dumb comment, places his hand on his forehead.
- Exaggerated:
- Bob places his head in both his hands, then more hands somehow show up and cover his face.
- Multiple people cradle their foreheads with their hands after seeing/hearing something dumb.
- Downplayed:
- Bob rests his head on his index finger.
- Bob rubs the side of his head in annoyance.
- Justified:
- Bob wants to hide his look of disdain from whoever made the dumb comment.
- Bob's exasperation is giving him a headache, and rubbing his forehead is the natural response.
- Inverted:
- Bob has a hand on his desk, he hears a dumb comment and rests his head on it.
- Alternatively, he leans back with his hands on his seat's head rest as he takes in the dumb comment.
- Subverted: Bob hears a dumb comment, raises a hand near his head, then puts his hand down.
- Double Subverted: ...then he puts his hand in his head after a Beat.
- Parodied:
- After hearing a dumb comment, his hand launches from his wrist on a spring into his head.
- Bob is an anthropomophic elephant and he facepalms with his trunk, in other word faceplming with his face.
- Everyone in the room facepalm at once, causing a shockwave that circles the planet dozens of times causing irreparable destruction... because someone misread the time by one minute.
- Zig-Zagged:
- Averted: Bob hears a dumb comment and simply shakes his head, he doesn't move his hands at all
- Enforced: "He's got to put his hand on his head or how do we know he's flabbergasted? "
- Lampshaded: "Bob's doing the hand on his head thing, he must think what you said was dumb"
- Invoked: "If we were face-to-face, I'd be doing that thing where I sigh and put my head in my hand right about now."
- Exploited: Bob unknowingly has a poison needing inhalation on the palm of his hand, his assailant says something low-key stupid and he facepalms, killing himself.
- Defied: "I'm just going to stare at you until you realise what an idiot you are".
- Discussed: "If he says something stupid, I won't respond. I'll just put my head in my hand and deal with it that way."
- Conversed: "Captain Bob is the type to just put his head in his hands if someone says something stupid."
- Deconstructed: Bob, after a life of doing this as a go-to response to dumb comments, just gets more stressed rather than less when he facepalms.
- Reconstructed: Bob learns other methods to deal with stress while he facepalms.
