Basic Trope: Ability subject to growth or refinement.

  • Straight: Bob's Cherubic Bolt can evolve into the more powerful Seraph Strike through repeated use.
  • Exaggerated: Bob's Cherubic Bolt eventually evolves into the Heaven Remaker spell, capable of breaking universal walls and killing gods.
  • Downplayed: Bob's Cherubic Bolt becomes easier to fire the more he uses it.
  • Justified:
    •  Bob's powers are a special form of magic that feed off their owner's will to use it to become stronger.
    • Bob absorbs his enemies' life force, which he applies to strengthening his powers.
  • Inverted: Bob's Seraph Strike degenerates into Cherubic Bolt due to his overuse of it.
  • Subverted: Bob's Cherubic Bolt seems to evolve into Seraph Strike, but its actually a separate spell he learned.
  • Double Subverted: ...However Cherubic Bolt eventually evolves into Cherubic Choir because he learned Seraph Strike.
  • Parodied: Bob trains all kinds of random skills, like Dish Washing and acting foolish, into ridiculous yet terrifying powers like Grand Equalizer and Nightmare Story.
  • Zig Zagged: Some of Bob's powers can be improved, whilst others are unchanging constants.
  • Averted: Powers cannot be improved upon.
  • Enforced: "We need to let the players feel empowered, but designing another dozen moves is hard. Hey, why not just have the existing skills evolve into stronger ones?"
  • Lampshaded: "When did you learn Seraph Strike!? What, did you evolve Cherubic Bolt or something?"
  • Invoked: Bob pays close attention to how Cherubic Bolt works so he can use it better.
  • Exploited: Emperor Evulz manipulates the strengthened Bob into breaking his seals for him.
  • Defied: The Source of All Magic makes it impossible for one to alter the nature of their spells, forcing them to learn entire new ones instead.
  • Discussed: "Whatever happened to Bob's Cherubic Bolt attack?" "Obviously it became Seraph Strike, he isn't known for studying and it did appear after Cherubic Bolt vanished."
  • Conversed: "Why do characters always seem to get new moves just by refining their existing ones?" "I think it helps show their intelligence, as no mere simpleton could dramatically improve their powers through hard work alone."
  • Implied: Bob's Cherubic Bolt seems to hit harder than it did when he started, though the enemies he's fighting do have lower durability.
  • Deconstructed: Bob's powers, while they do become stronger, become harder to use for that reason. Thus unable to use his strongest attacks within populated areas, Emperor Evulz simply brings hostages or runs his schemes entirely in populated places.
  • Reconstructed: Though Bob's powers become stronger, he also becomes better at using them. Thus he's able to restrain his strongest attacks when innocents are involved.
  • Played For Laughs: Bob trains his dish washing skill, and is surprised when a menu suddenly pops up telling him he unlocked Perma-Clean from frequently washing dishes.
  • Played For Drama: Since Bob can train any action, he ends up developing numerous passive abilities that make him come off as evil such as Killing Intent and an intimidating presence amongst others.
